“Everett.” Lottie sniffs back tears as she looks up at him. “Please don’t do anything to jeopardize your nomination to the Vermont Supreme Court.”

“Of course not.”

His brows furrow in that way that lets me know he’s not convinced of this himself. But knowing Everett, this is one ship he’ll happily go down with.

And why?

Because not only will it make him look like a hero in Lottie’s eyes, but he would have fixed her entire world, not to mention Charlie’s.

My phone chirps and I fish it out.

“It’s a text from my sister,” I say as I click on it and the three of us lean in a notch to read it.

Noah! I’m in love. I’m in LOOOVE! Aren’t you going to ask with who?

“I’ll bite,” I say, quickly asking her exactly that. “Let’s see who the flavor of the week is.”

My phone chirps once again.

Jed Silver.

Lottie, Everett, and I exchange a quick glance.

“Wow,” Lottie muses. “That escalated quickly.”

My phone goes off again.

I’m going to spend my entire life with him, Noah. I finally know exactly how you feel about Lottie. I can’t live a single minute without him.

“Oh, Noah.” Lottie gives me a quick embrace and a kiss to the cheek just as the nurse comes in with a wheelchair to escort Carlotta out of this place.

Lottie heads that way to help and Everett nods at me.

“That’s how I feel about her, too, buddy,” he says, patting my back with a hint of pity in his voice. “I’m sorry about Sam.”

I nod. “She’s about to have her heart broken in the very worst way. I need to get Jed Silver out of her life. Everything he touches turns to cinder.”

“The natural order of things will prove that to her eventually.”

We take off and head back to Honey Hollow, all the while an entire group of women run through my mind on a loop.

Charlie needs a savior, and Everett all but vowed he’s going to be just that for her.

Sam needs somebody else to fill that hole in her life—anyone other than Jed Silver.

Bella Hall needs justice.

And Lottie Lemon needs to be with me.

But for some reason, she doesn’t seem to be aware of it.

I’ll have to rectify that.

Here’s hoping I can.

EVERETT

Carlotta survived.
