Nell chuckles. “We both know that’s not true. Now get over there. I’ll be back soon enough, my child.” She lands a simple kiss to my cheek. “I’ll be here to guide you through it all.”
“Guide me through what?” I shout as Nell evaporates to nothing.
A darkness so cold and black fills the void in her wake just as the sound of a siren wails through the night.
I make my way to Cormack, glancing back every now and again to see if Nell would reappear.
Cormack grabs ahold of my hand as she’s lifted onto a gurney.
“I’m not letting go of you, Lisa Lou. A human shouldn’t be allowed to endure this kind of agony. Get my lawyers on the phone. I’m going to sue everyone, including that woman who took a bite of that apple.”
Mom volunteers to watch Lyla Nell for me as I jump into the back of the ambulance along with Cormack.
We race off into the night, and I watch as the B&B grows smaller and smaller.
Nell says I’m about to go through a very dark and difficult season, I think to myself as Cormack howls up a storm.
Something tells me I’d rather trade places with Cormack than face whatever is about to come my way.
A very dark and difficult season is on the horizon, and whatever it is I’m going to face, my grandmother will be right there to see me through it.
A chill runs up my spine as I stare out into the black Honey Hollow night.
I can’t shake this feeling that whatever is coming my way—it’s pure evil.
