The old woman spoke after the question was posed to her.

“When the sun and moon move together, the power of the mountain can be persuaded,” Dove-caller translated.

“When the sun and moon..? Oh! The Celts, Bryant’s people, call them the sun and fire feasts. So the cave can return me home during those times, too. Is that what she’s saying?”

Dove-caller posed my question, then returned the old woman’s answer, “Only when your journey is complete.”

“Ask her how—”

My question was cut off when the old woman reached into a bag and pulled out a pink quartz stone and pressed it into my palm.

“Flying Deer says that you look on this journey as a curse,” Dove-caller added as the old woman spoke. “But you must see it as a gift—to others, to you. You were sent here for a great purpose. A storm is coming that will destroy many, and you and your mate will conquer this darkness together.”

“One problem, I don’t have a mate,” I said.

Not even a jerky, egotistical boyfriend. Not after last summer.

“He is with you,” Dove-caller said. “His eyes do not yet see your face, but his spirit calls for you.”

“Great. Hopefully he gets my phone number sometime before I’m fifty,” I murmured, then grimaced at the pink crystal in my fingers. “What do I do with this?”

“You will know when it is needed,” Dove-caller answered for the medicine woman.

“Is it magic then?”

“This stone has no magic but that which you give to it.”

Well, that was extremely unhelpful.

Still, the old woman did confirm that my secret cavemightbe able to take me back to the twentieth century at some point. Filtering out the mystical talk, perhaps the electrical properties of the cave activate during the solstices and sun and fire feasts.

Meaning my earliest ticket home would be Samhain—Halloween—October 31st.

Four months from now.

FATED MATES

CHAPTER 9

Janie’s Got a Gun

“Let’s pick up the pace,” Bryant said as we rode through the forest. “I want to get to the cabin before nightfall. Arcans might still be looming these parts.”

“What? Oh, right. At least you’ve warned Black Crow and the elders about them,” I said distractedly.

“They’ll keep extra warriors posted around the village and send word if any are spotted nearby.”

“Hmm.”

Bryant glanced back at me as we rode, then finally reined his horse around to walk beside mine. “All right, then. What’s eating at you, woman?”

“What? Oh. Nothing, I’m fine.”

“Sure as when a woman says nothing is wrong, there is. Tell me what’s going through your mind, Callista? Are you worried about the Arcan Hunters?”

“Yes, let’s go with that.”

“Rest easy,” he said. “After I settle you into the cabin, I’ll search the area myself to make sure none are roaming about. I promise that none will catch you in your sleep tonight.”
