“Because, some souls you can’t forget. They echo your own.” Rachelle perks up, and I turn to see what fills the glee on her face. “Speaking of soulmates.”

“Joy, just another jackass.” Enzo is strutting his stuff toward us. “Can you believe the nerve of this guy, Elle?” But she leaves because she believes in love.

“Phoebe.”

“Kenzo.”

“Ouch, that K hurts me every time. But I guess I deserve it.”

“What do you want?” I look up at his face; he has that happy look, the same one he had during the wedding. He watched me the whole time; super annoying.

“I knew you were in town for the rest of the weekend. Let me take you out?”

“No, thank you.” I smile.

“Please.”

“Fine but leave me alone.” I turn and leave, a little excited or it might be murder tendencies rising to the top. I can never tell. “If you talk to me at this stupid wedding one more time, I will freak out,” I tell Rachelle, and of course, she is filled with glee.

But after the wedding, Enzo asks if we can do it another night; he wants to spend time with Kassidy’s kids before they go. I don’t know what is happening there, but he isn’t my boyfriend, so I don’t care.

Until I find out he is a liar.

Elle and I decide to go out and have some drinks. But we see Enzo and a group of people. He is the center of attention; how could he not be?

“I thought you were seeing your Kassidy’s son tonight.” That’s what he told me; that’s what I believed. Until my eyes decided that wasn’t the truth.

“Yeah, no, plans fell through. Kassidy’s decided to leave earlier than expected.” Enzo avoids my eyes.

The girl across from Enzo touches his hand for comfort.

“Can you believe a mother would keep her kid from his father? She has no right! You can’t imagine how psycho she must be.”

“Yeah, I can imagine.” Before Rachelle says my name and I awaken from my stupor. I don’t say anything, and I realize I’m the outcast again. I stay there for a few more seconds of silence.

“Hey, Phoebe, I’ll call you later. I’ll come over.” Enzo stands up and says it out of the earshot of his coworkers. What would they think of him if they knew he was ever with me?

“Oh no, don’t do that. I won’t be there. Rachelle and I have to go record a segment.” Fuck him.

“Sorry I didn’t message you, um, it was really last minute, and everyone was headed out.” Enzo looks caught red-handed.

“And your phone shattered because someone shot a bullet at you and your phone saved you. You could have said if you didn’t want to see me.” Fuck, why does it matter? It shouldn’t. But it hurts.

“It wasn’t like that.”

“But what if it was? What if you stopped the bullshit? And we’re just honest with your pathetic self. And fuck, maybe I am just as much of an idiot as you make me out to be because I seem to be a fool for even a fucking second of your valuable time.”

“Phoebe!” Rachelle tries to calm my anger.

“I’m telling this motherfucker off, Rachelle! Can you give me a mother flipping minute?” I can’t believe we are here again; who am I to him but someone he can keep attached to? “Sorry, as you can see, I have to go, and it isn’t a lie just to get out of being around your toxic asshole.”

“Wow, classy behavior, Pheebs.” Enzo has the nerve.

“Are you upset I am not this chill person all the time? You don’t think I have insecurities? Don’t be an idiot; just because you want this awesome girlfriend who doesn’t fret or flame a fight on petty issues doesn’t mean I don’t have feelings.”

“Oh my gosh, Phoebe. You aren’t my girlfriend.” I hear his teeth crack at the fact the truth annoys him.

“Like, oh my gosh, Kenny, thank fuck for that.” I flip him off and walk away.
