“Don’t, Bam, please, not tonight.” I sniffle rubbing away the emotions. I blink away the tears and she doesn’t say another word. She hugs me and I hug her back. “Have fun tonight and make more babies.”

“Eventually, I’ll have so many they will start walking out of my vagina.” Bambi, gosh I love her.

The bonfire is a fire hazard to say the least. An accident waiting to happen for the happily drunk kids dancing around it.

Angie is the first person I seek out to show myself to, in case I want to leave as soon as possible. But I did my due diligence and showed my face. But then another face finds me and I guess I am relieved I have someone to talk to. Then again it could have been anyone else except the person I despise most.

“What are you doing here?” Lad strolls up to me. Shame he found me, I was doing such a good job hiding from the circle of students.

“Oh my gosh, do they know you escaped from the pound?” Lad has these thick curls when he doesn’t style his hair. Damn, might even think they are adorable, but everybody else does, so I don’t need to join the team on making this guy feel better about himself.

“Very funny, want a beer?” Lad is more relaxed out of the school scene. At night, in the flickers of the fire, I can see a different side of him and I wonder what else he hides away from the world.

“No, thank you, Aladden.” I guess he doesn’t want to play sword wounds and stabbings tonight. Our usual verbal match has been shelved for the time being.

“So, why did you come here?” His voice sounds so familiar, and I must be off my game, because I swear it is comforting.

“Didn’t Angie tell you to finally confess my undying love to you?” I promise it will be the last sarcastic comment I make tonight.

Okay, I can’t promise.

“She did tell me that, except her exact words were more along the lines of Alaska totally wants to hook up with you tonight, and I was the perfect wing woman and convinced her to come.” Lad smiles and takes a drink.

I watch as his lips part, and that liquid trickles down his throat with a swallow. Lad’s eyes watch me as I find his bodily functions amazing. God, I must be bored out of my mind to find him attractive. I guess we all need a plaything to keep us entertained for a while.

“What did you say?” Focusing on the fire in the distance and not on Lad, even as he steps closer to me.

“I gave her a high-five. Anybody who convinces you to do anything, earns my respect.” Downing another gulp; this time I control myself and don’t gawk.

“Do you think it is wise for you to be mixing alcohol with your candy problem?” It’s better we stick to the realm of reality than try and see how long we can last horizontal.

Lad looks at the glass bottle, debating if he even has a problem. “Guess we will find out.” Chugging the rest of the bottle and throwing it in the fire.

“Wow.”

“What?” Still holding another bottle to his chest, like I might steal it from him.

“I just didn’t know you hated nature, along with being an avid polluter of our ecosystem.” See, this is why I can’t promise anything other than being myself.

“I do not hate nature.” But Lad laughs, and then I guess by some unnatural force, I do too.

We both stand close by and part of me isn’t thinking about dying Lad’s swimming pool blue to stain his skin to look like a Smurf. Part of me is thinking I don’t feel lonely for once.

“It’s nice to see you like this.” Lad’s eyes are blazing into the side of my face. Or it could just be the fire; who knows at this point?

“See me outside of a classroom where you aren’t snoring and having sex dreams about me?” Shit, I really couldn’t even quit it for like a few minutes; maybe I have a problem. Or maybe I am meant to be a comedian.

“That was one time.” Lad laughs it off. “I meant it is nice to see you, embracing yourself. It’s like you stepped into your confidence. Plus, you look good in your dress tonight.” Is he fucking with me?

“Are you giving me a compliment? Wait, why are you being nice to me? Were you going to give me your drink but you secretly laced it with poison?” I take a step away from him, not enjoying the friendliness anymore.

“Chill, Alyeska. I had a rough week. I’m holding a white flag for tonight. Take it or leave it.”

I turn to face him fully.

“What?” Still kissing his bottle like he knows how to make love with any object in his hands.
