Julian couldn’t stay too upset with me after destroying his family dinner. I have many talents and I told him I can’t dim them just to make his family seem more interesting.

It is fun to see him as daddy to the girls. For the longest time, Bambi never admitted who had gotten her pregnant. She didn’t want him to come under fire from others, especially his family. Bam is loyal like that; she isn’t out to force others to make the right choices. She does what she believes is right.

Good thing Julian got his head out of his ass, or I would have kicked it clear across the country.

“Hey, Aly, how’s the semester treating you?” I slap his hand for a high five.

“Well, I’m not pregnant yet, so better than you two.” I give him a wink and he shakes his head.

He laughs and spins each daughter under his arm high in the air. He doesn’t regret it; Julian was made to have this family. They all belong to each other, and it makes me want something similar.

The idea makes me freeze. I haven’t ever thought about having a family of my own. It didn’t seem like a reasonable option at the time, going from crisis to crisis.

Bambi grabs the iron and her clean sheets.

“Don’t do that. I understand you want to be Holly Homemaker, but I draw the line at you ironing your sheets. If you continue to act like this, I have no choice but to get you checked out, or worse, contact the man who sticks radioactive stuff up your nose to see if your snot will glow.” Bambi is an overachiever.

“Shoot, I am going to be late for work.” My cousin hands me Ruby and I rest her in my lap, letting her play with the remote.

“Why don’t you quit already?” Julian places the empty teacup to his lips.

“We’ve talked about this before.” My cousin is fiercely independent.

“I make enough money for both of us.” Julian definitely does, but Bambi doesn’t want to depend on him. Because she is scared one day he might change his mind and she will be left with nothing to support the girls.

“Well, tell that to your mother next time you talk to her, or better idea, you quit, and I will bring home the bacon.” Bambi has a rather odd relationship with Emily Crawford. I can’t say many have any good relationships with the woman, and if they do, they are lying.

“It’s our money, baby, not theirs.” Julian is grabbing his jacket and following her out; he waves, and I salute him.

“Whatever you have to say to yourself to make you feel better.” Bambi kisses my forehead and hugs her daughters goodbye.

“Now who wants to watchHarry Potterand learn new spells to cast on the bad guys?” These girls are going to have to learn a thing or two if they want to get by in life. I am doing my part by showing them what true friendship looks like.

“I’ll go get my wand, Aunt Aly.” Libby is eager and I appreciate the enthusiasm.

“What?”

Ruby stares at me and puts onBaby Shark.

“Not today, maybe not ever again.” She no longer is allowed remote privileges if she is going to disrespect my main man Daniel Radcliff.

Don’t tell Aladden, he wouldn’t understand my interest in another fictional character.

Chapter 14

Aladden

Eventually, thedosageofpills wasn’t doing it for me. I wasn’t even getting a high, but the more I took, I knew it wouldn’t end the way I wanted to. So quitting was the best option, even if it felt terribly close to death.

I promised myself, I promised Alyeska, I would be better, and for now, I feel good, I feel fine.

Both of us need a break from school and life. I don’t have practice until Monday, so we have two days to ourselves. I figure I will take her on little road trip, not too far away.

On the way, we are singing along to songs, having a great time, making fun of each other’s high notes. That is when I see it, a field filled with dead dandelions, all white flutters ready to be made into wishes in the wind.

I pull over and she stares at me, confused, not knowing my plans. Opening her door and helping her out, she is still quiet, waiting. I lead her to the center of the field, ignoring the idea of possible ticks climbing into our clothes and burrowing in our skin.

Okay, Lyme disease is not what I want to think about right now.
