I look closer at her as she sits down. “Have you been crying?” I pass her a tissue. “Is there a problem? Oswald hasn’t been able to contact you, has he?”

She blows her nose loudly. “Not everything in my life revolves around that asshole, you know.”

I sit back in my seat, examining her closely. I click my fingers a moment later. “Your boss yelled at you, right?”

She groans. “Stop doing that.”

“So I’m right. She threatened to fire you? What did you do that was so bad?”

“Flight’s delayed,” she replies. “And she thinks that’s somehow my fault.” She sits bolt upright, her hand curling into a fist around her empty wineglass. “How is that my fault?”

“It’s not.”

“I got all the way to the gate and then sent back here. I rang her and told her, but she didn’t believe me. Told me she’s got a schedule to keep, and I’m ruining it. Kept telling me how useless I am, that she needs the dress in her hands right now.”

“You let her talk to you like that?”

She groans. “I’ve got to see her in her office tomorrow, and I know she’s going to fire me for this. So forgive me if I’m upset, but I need this job, and now a flight delay will ruin it for me.”

“You want to know what I think?”

“What do you think?”

“Your job’s safe.”

“How could you possibly know that?”

“I can pull strings from time to time.”

She narrows her eyes, looking straight at me. “You’re trying to make me feel better, but it won’t work.”

“You work for Melanie Harrison, right?”

“You did well to remember the name.”

“I have a connection with her. I could make use of it for you. Make sure you keep your job.”

“Bullshit. You’re just trying to pull me down into the underworld, Mr. Pluto.”

“If that was my plan, I’d have done it by now.”

She looks at me, and her pupils dilate. I know what that means, and the thought makes my cock twitch. “Wait there,” I tell her, getting to my feet. I make a call to Toby from the corner of the bar. It takes two minutes, and then I’m back with her.

“Done.”

“What’s done?”

“You’re not going to lose your job over this.”

“Seriously? How could you make that happen?”

I shrug. “I’m the man who makes things happen.”

“Can you make a glass of wine happen?”

“Only if I can join you. I’m waiting for the same flight as you.”

“You are?”
