I would’ve driven all of us if it didn’t mean squishing the kids in the back of my truck.

“Do you mind?” she asks, holding up her keys.

I take the keys in one hand and her hand in another. “Let’s go.

Christmas music is playing over the loudspeakers when we get to the rink. The place is packed, but we’re still able to get our skates and some dinner before heading out on the ice.

Brayden and Aspen clearly have experience ice skating because they are easily able to keep on their feet. The same can’t be said for Eloise.

“Do not let me go,” she says as I skate backward and pull her along with me.

“I won’t let you go.” I chuckle.

“Why is this fun to people?” Her voice rises in panic as other skaters zip around us at lightning-fast speeds.

“Brayden and Aspen seem to be enjoying it.” I nod to my right as they pass her.

“Hey, Mom!”

“Mom, look at me go!”

Eloise tries to glance over at them quickly, but she’s still too nervous and focuses on her feet.

“You are like Bambi when he was first trying to walk,” I joke.

“Stop making me laugh,” she yells half-heartedly. “I’m trying to focus.”

I kick my foot to increase our speed and make her grip on me turn into a vise.

“Too fast. Too fast!”

I’m about to tell her that I won’t let anything happen to her when someone yells behind me. But since I’m skating backward, I don’t see what’s about to happen, but judging from the size of Eloise’s eyes widen in horror, I have a pretty good idea.

My foot catches on something, and it sends me flying, along with Eloise.

CHAPTER7

Eloise

I immediately regretted my decision to skate tonight for fear of falling when I first stepped on the ice.

Silas and the kids insisted after we arrived, telling me that it wouldn’t be any fun without me. So, I caved against my better judgment. But as I currently find myself flying through the air, my only thought is that I should’ve listened to my instincts.

“Oomph,” I say. The force of my landing on top of Silas knocks the wind out of me momentarily.

Silas looks momentarily stunned from the impact, blinking a few times like he has to remember where he is.

“Sy?” I ask just as someone yells another warning.

Silas reacts quicker than I can, flipping me onto my back and using his body to shield me when more skaters start falling like dominos. There is chaos all around us, but all I can see is the concerned look on his face as he stares down at me.

“Are you okay?” He cups my face in his hand. “Are you hurt?”

“No.” I shake my head.

“No, you aren’t okay? Or no, you aren’t hurt?”

I smile at the sweetness that is his worrying about me. “I’m not hurt.”
