“The point, little brother, is thatshebetter be worth losing your family over.”

I open my mouth to say something, but I can’t find the words. Even though I am not my father, he’s right; I sure as hell am behaving like him. What I do know is that I will never leave my family stranded, nor can I give Brianna up.

“Hey, there you are, look who’s here.” Savanna beams, placing a kiss on my cheek. “You two look too serious; you need food,” she says as she disappears into the house.

“She’s a good woman, man. I know that relationships aren’t perfect, but the grass ain’t always greener on the other side.”

“I know that, but it’s complicated, bro.”

“You are the one who’s making this shit complicated. It doesn’t have to be. You can keep it in your pants, for starters.”

I run my hands through my hair. “Jase, nothing is ever just black and white in any situation.”

“Bre and I have some rather surprising news,” Nate says, his hands draped over her chair.

Brianna’s eyes meet mine across the table.

“Oh my God, what is it?” Savanna shrieks. We’re having lunch together at my wife’s insistence.

“Bre is pregnant.” Nate beams and Savanna is across the room in seconds, hugging her friend.

I spit out my drink, nearly choking. Savanna frowns at me.

“Bre, why didn’t you tell me?” Savanna complains.

“I wanted to be sure first, and I would have been the one to tell you now if this big mouth hadn’t spilled the tea.”

“Congratulations,” my wife beams. “How far along?”

“Three months give or take,” Bre smiles. And when she does, I know without a doubt that the baby is mine.

“Congratulations,” I say. “To you both.”

“Thank you,” Nate tells me.

I’ve suddenly lost my appetite. She’s pregnant, and she didn’t tell me. What the fuck are we going to do now?

When they leave, I sit outside, unsure how to take the news.

Me: I need to see you tomorrow, at our usual place.

Bre: Okay.

I sit on the edge of the bed in the hotel room that has become our place. It’s raining outside, and that does nothing to improve my mood. She walks in a few minutes later, taking a seat next to me. I lean in to kiss her, but she pulls away.

“This has to end, Denton.” She lets out a breath.

“What the hell do you mean? This baby is mine as much as it is yours. I want to be a part of this. I don’t know how, but I do.”

“Maybe this is the wake-up call we both need so we move on with our lives.” She tells me, still not looking at me.

“You want me to pretend that another man is the father of my baby?”

“You say that like you know for sure this baby is yours,” she snaps.

“I fucking do,” I say, forcing her to look at me.

“Then go and tell Savanna that. Tell her that you’ve been fucking me on and off for years, and now you’ve knocked me up.”
