She squeezed my hand, the two of us sharing a smile before returning to our meals.

It was hard to focus on the food. Between my new neighbors and the reality of my farm, I had a feeling that the way my life would look like come springtime would be totally different.

Chapter 8

Aubrey

“How are we feeling?”

I gave the matter some thought. Aggie and I were seated in the small, cozy den, a roaring fire in the hearth as snow came down in sheets outside. My belly was full of delicious food, a big, heavy blanket wrapped around me as I watched the flames dance. To make it even more perfect, I had another glass of wine close at hand.

Aggie was seated over in the other easy chair in front of the fire, a true crime book opened up on her lap.

“You know, pretty damn good. Thanks again for helping with the cooking.”

“Hey, I did more than ‘help’.” She grinned. “And I’m happy to do it.” Her expression turned serious, with a touch of worry. “Listen, I didn’t mean to come down on you so hard at dinner. Sometimes I get a little too worked up for my own good; not all of us are as skilled at staying cool, you know.”

“Don’t even worry about it. One of the reasons I asked you to join me in this whole operation was because I know you’ve got no problem keeping it real with me. It’s one of your best qualities, even when it means you’re chewing me out over Thanksgiving dinner.”

“Good! Because I couldn’t turn it off even if I wanted to. So, as long as we’re in this together, that’s what you’re getting.”

“Wouldn’t have it any other way.”

She gave me a smile and an affirmative nod.

“Anyway, I have an idea.”

“An idea? Oh no…”

“Trust me, this is going to be a good one. I’m thinking that since I put a little bit of a damper on our holiday, it’s only fair that I try to help lighten the mood.”

“What’d you have in mind?”

“Let me handle the dishes. If you ask me, this looks like the perfect weather for a hot bath and a glass of wine.”

The idea was very tempting.

“You don’t have to do that, Aggs.”

“I know I don’t have to,I’m offering, and I want to. And don’t forget you’re the one who braved the cold to retrieve George, the world’s dumbest llama. Now, get your butt up there and have a soak. Don’t forget the candles!”

I laughed, pushing myself out of my seat.

“Alright, alright. Thanks, Aggs.”

She winked, giving me a finger gun before turning her attention back to her book.

I headed into the kitchen, the sink full of plates and silverware and pots and pans. After topping off my glass, I went upstairs to my bedroom’s ensuite bath. The room was lovely, with a slanted ceiling and windows that looked out over the back stretch of the property, giving me a view of the blizzard in progress, and the roof of the barn already topped with white. The tub was gorgeous—a freestanding antique clawfoot. After years of living in a New York apartment with a shower that was barely big enough for me, the tub was an amenity that I made sure to take advantage of as often as possible.

I left the main lights of the bathroom off, choosing to do as Aggie suggested and light a few candles. Once those were going, hot water streaming into the tub with a little lavender bath oil, I was more than ready to get in. Once out of my clothes, I stepped into the sudsy water, letting out an “ohh, maaaan” as I slipped inside.

Once I’d adjusted to the heat, the water and the bath oil working their magic on my worn muscles, I took in a deep, slow breath, a big, stupid smile on my face. The window in front of the tub looked out onto the snow, and I couldn’t think of any place I’d rather be during weather like this.

I took another sip of my wine, settling into a perfect buzz. Suddenly, Mac and Adam popped into my mind.

Just the thought of the two gorgeous men was enough to make my pussy tingle. I set my wine glass down, biting my lip. I thought of their steely, narrowed eyes, their sensuous mouths, their big, rough hands. The picture of them in my mind’s eye was so complete and clear that I could almost feel what it’d be like to have those huge hands, calloused from hard days of work, all over my body.

As ridiculous as it had initially sounded, I couldn’t stop thinking about what Aggie had said about being with all four of them at the same time. Almost out of my control, my hand began to slip under the water and between my thighs.
