“You sure?”

She laughed. “What, you don’t think I understand my own feelings?”

“No, not that,” I said quickly. “Not that at all. Just… want to make sure that you know there’s an open dialogue about these things. All of our doors are wide open if you want to talk.”

“I appreciate it. I’m happy with it, Mac. And I’m even happier that you guys are going out of your way to make sure I’m feeling good about what we did. Still, all I can do is be honest with you about how I’m feeling now, then process the rest later.”

“Honesty. That’s what this is about. Anything that comes up, let us know.”

We reached the door at the far end of the hallway, stopping and turning to one another.

“I will. Right now, I need some rest.”

I allowed myself a smile, pleased at her directness.

“You should be all set in here,” I said, opening the door and revealing a small, but cozy room with a double bed, dresser, and connected bathroom. “I’ll have your clothes washed and ready for you in the morning, breakfast ready for you, too.”

“Thanks, Mac, for everything.”

I shook my head. “No, thank you.”

The way she looked in that moment, her slender body covered in baggy clothes, her curls still mussed from our fun, the snow-dappled moonlight casting her face in silver light… there was no way I could resist kissing her.

So, I did. I leaned in and placed my lips on hers. Part of me expected her to push me away and tell me again that she needed rest, time to process things. She didn’t. Instead, she stood up on her tiptoes and kissed me right back. My mouth opened and so did hers, and for a few, fleeting moments, her delicious taste washed over me.

My cock stiffened, and I knew I was ready for more. My resistance waned more and more as the kiss went on.

It wasn’t a good idea. Using all the will I had, I placed my hands on the softness of her hips and gently pushed her away.

“Got some things I want to do to you,” I said. “But they might interfere with your processing, and your rest.”

She smiled that gorgeous smile and looked away for a moment.

We kissed one more time.

“Good night, Aubrey. Sleep well.”

“You too.”

With that, we parted. I shut the door behind her, fatigue washing over me as soon as I was alone. And as I made my way back to my room, I allowed myself about the biggest smile I’d worn in God-only-knew how long.

“Got a surprise for you two!” I said, heading into the twins’ room as I roused them for the morning.

“I’m tired.” Henry spoke the words as he rubbed his eyes.

“A surprise?” Hattie was a little more eager, she loved unexpected stuff.

“Yup.” I scooped Henry out of bed, bringing the big guy over to the dresser and pulling out some clothes. “First of all, check this out.” I pulled open the nearby curtains, revealing a gorgeous sweep of pure, white snow. The clouds had cleared, the sky a perfect blue above the endless expanse of white.

“Wow!” Henry’s fatigue was gone the second he laid eyes on the snow. “Can we play in it?”

“You’re going to have to ask our special breakfast guest. So, the faster you two get ready, the faster you can do that.”

Henry got his butt into gear at my words. The kids were all kinds of excited, eagerly chatting with one another about who could be waiting for them downstairs.

“Aubrey!” The twins said her name at the same time as we entered the kitchen, rushing over to throw their arms around her.
