“What’s up?” he took off his black-framed reading glasses and set them aside.

“I know we talked about stepping back and letting things go last night,” I said, sliding into one of the chairs across from the desk. “And I agree with you – when it comes to the Aubrey matter.”

“Good to hear. But I’m getting the impression that there’s something else you’re not as keen to let slide.”

I nodded. “Yep. Seth.”

Mac said nothing at first, his jaw working as he thought about the man we all wanted to take a crack at. Finally, he sighed and sat back.

“Nothing we can do right now until he pops up and shows his hand.”

“You think he might try to get custody of the kids?” I asked. “Play the dad card and try to get them back?”

Just the thought of Henry and Hattie being taken away from us and given tohimwas enough to make me sick.

“He could try. But we’ve got Kristen’s last will and testament. It’s in plain writing that she wanted us to be the kids’ guardians.”

“But he’s still their biological father.” I shook my head. “God, I wish she would’ve pushed a little harder to get him to sign those parental relinquishment forms.”

“So do I. But we all know what she was going through when that was happening, brother. He was putting his hands on her, getting more and more aggressive. It was only a matter of time before he crossed the line further.”

Thinking about that possibility sent a fresh pulse of anger through me.

“I wish she would’ve listened to us about him from the get-go. We knew he was scum, spotted him for what he was right away. You remember what happened when he found out Kristen was pregnant, right?”

Mac let out a dry, humorless laugh. “When he tried to pressure Kristen into getting an abortion? How the hell could I forget?” He sighed, setting his hands on his desk and leaning forward. “Listen, until he goes into criminal territory, there’s not much we can do.”

“He could take us to court.”

“You’re right, he could. But we’ve got more than enough money to tie the thing up in court for as long as we need to. Hell, with the money we made on this last mission we could hire the best lawyers in the state and let them handle it. The guy’s a loser, couldn’t even afford an ambulance-chaser to fight us.”

“Exactly, and he knows it. Might make him think he’s got to be creative if he wants to get to the twins.”

“Asshole doesn’t even want to be a dad,” Mac said, anger in his voice. “He just wants to get his hands on some money. He doesn’t give a shit about Henry and Hattie’s welfare. We just need to—”

Mac didn’t get a chance to finish. A chime sounded in the office, an alert to signify that someone was coming up the road to our place.

“You expecting anyone?” I asked.

“Nope.” Mac typed a few keys on his laptop, bringing the security feed from the front gate onto the TV on the wall. We both watched as a rundown SUV pulled up to the gate. A blonde head attached to a pair of scrawny shoulders stuck out.

“Speak of the goddamn devil,” I said.

Chapter 25

Marcus

“I’ll kill the son of a bitch!”

Rage ran through me.

“You’re not killing anyone, bro,” Mac said. “We’re going to talk to him and keep cool heads about it. Understand?”

“Just tell me your reasoning,” I said. “Tell me why you thought it was a good idea to invite him onto our land.”

“Well, I really didn’t invite him, did I? He just drove up. Not to mention, there’s four of us and one of him.” He lifted up one side of his shirt, showing off a pistol. “Not anticipating that he’s going to be stupid, but we’ll be ready if he is.”

“But why not stop him at the gate?” Tyler asked.
