I couldn’t believe it. We were about to welcome another child into our family.
“I guess this is a pretty good time forourgift,” Mac said, stepping over to pick up the small box for Aubrey.
She took it from Mac, opening the wrapping and revealing a small box of black satin. She popped it open, a gorgeous diamond ring inside.
Mac cleared his throat, ready to begin the big speech we all had planned.
“Aubrey, we—”
“Yes!”
I laughed. So much for speeches.
She threw her arms around Mac, then kissed each and every last one of us. Mom was in tears, and Dad looked to be on the verge.
“Are we going to have a little brother?” Henry asked, seeming to grasp what was going on.
“Or sister!” Hattie added.
Brother, sister, it didn’t matter. We had each other. We were a family.
