Fuck we need to go.

“There’s one last question,” Fynn unexpectedly announced as he and Felix rose up to their feet once more.

“Yes?” Lex responded while her eyes were examining her lengthy nails that were sharp and could claw the shit out of anyone.

She’d surely done a number on Nathan’s face. Was a pain in the ass to fucking heal.

“You stated Goldibitch and even Alpha Shade had to face consequences for not upholding the end of their bargains with the Tainted Time Keeper, correct?” Fynn brought up.

“Correct.”

“Then what did you sacrifice to get her to aid you?” Fynn asked. “Even if you’re in some sort of alliance with her due to the circumstances revolving around Laura and now Alpha Shade, I can’t figure out what could have been put on the pedestal as a good enough exchange for the Tainted Time Keeper to be cool with the idea of helping you with your conquest.”

“Isn’t that a bit intrusive to ask though?” Felix whispered to Fynn as he nervously looked at me and then Lex.

My pretty little monster didn’t seem to mind as she shrugged and closed her eyes once more. “It’s not that big of a deal,” she muttered and opened her eyes only halfway. “I sacrificed the ability to have kids.”

I didn’t expect my wolf to whimper at the news. Nor did I think my demon would be so flabbergasted by her admission. Where that left me was even further shocking because I had no idea how to feel about the news.

Fynn tried to speak but no words came out, and Felix looked sad at how casual Lex sounded when the heaviness of her admission really hit hard—especially since we were shifters.

“Do you not regret the decision?” Wallas was the one to quietly ask, and he didn’t hide his own concern. “You won’t be able to bring an heir to the Monarch family.”

“I wouldn’t need to bring an heir to the Monarch Empire,” she declared like it was a fact. “I may be the eldest, but my sister is but a few seconds younger than me. I’m sure she’s destined to have kids when she meets her mate.”

She paused as if she were thinking about it, her eyes lowering to her stomach as if she was attempting to picture herself being pregnant.

“Would I rather risk losing my fated mate to his diabolical father who wished to make me his concubine all because of the hidden powers I possess?” she offered, and that shut everyone up.

Her eyes closed and she reached for her neck once more. I couldn’t stop her from touching the raw flesh, and she flinched just slightly as if the wound electrocuted her with striking pain.

“My virginity was one thing, but I knew my purity would be like a special trophy to whoever broke through that veil. The curse wasn’t simply placed to be rid of Nathan. It was placed to ensure that when I was ripe for sex, Alpha Shade would be the one to take such power away from me and ensure I was a prisoner until I was pregnant with his child. I’m sure if you tell this to a human, they’ll mock such imaginary circumstances, but we all see how sickening the world is above. Can you really imagine Alpha Shade keeping a virgin just to be a sacrifice?”

Silence riddled the room, while her admission finally ensured everything made sense.

She was his experimental prodigy. The woman he abused and did everything he could to make stronger so that he could use her to breed children that would not only be Alphas but inherit the dangerous qualities she carries so flawlessly.

The ground trembled just slightly, and even as all eyes fell upon me, I couldn’t look from the floor as I clenched my fists. I’d known for a long time that my father didn’t have the best interests at heart for many people in our world—even taking into consideration that he may not consider me a son in comparison to his competition—but to hear from my own mate’s mouth my father’s intentions to breed with her… even after he’d gone above and beyond to take a bargain from a Time Keeper and make it so my bond with Laura was fabricated…

It was heart-shattering… so fucking brutal to believe your own blood could do something as sinister as this.

“If I didn’t play this game of being naive, no one would ever believe that Alpha Shade is the grand schemer behind all of our suffering,” Lex admitted. Her voice was thick with sadness and I couldn’t help but look at her to see if she was okay.

She gave me a sad smile, knowing well that this revelation really hit hard. These emotions were ones I hadn’t experienced in many years, and now they were simply overflowing with vengeance. She could see in my eyes how harshly this new level of betrayal had hit me, and I wasn’t sure how I’d be able to send my Astra into the battlefield knowing my father’s true purpose was to be rid of me entirely and steal the woman who was actually destined to be by my side.

“The truth hurts. There’s no denying that, but this was the only way I could think of to prove that I wasn’t an enemy but one who simply wants her mate to deliver the vengeance he deserves to strike his enemies with. Demons don’t get much out of betraying one another. That’s pretty understandable, but wolf shifters benefit so much from betrayal, it’s rather insulting. Above the surface, a war is surely approaching, which means alliances are the ultimate powerplay. The problem is, your father doesn’t care about stopping the war. He wishes for it to occur so he can sweep in and reveal all he’s been hiding from the world.”

She sighed and looked at her palms as if she could see the map of my father’s plans in her grasp.

“Those who aren’t sacrificed are always sent to be experiments to those malicious labs that are filled with ruthless savages who don’t give a shit about our lives. Survival is everything, and they drill that into those poor shifters so that when the time comes, they’ll be unleashed back into the world, their savage brutality causing them to walk down a path of utter destruction. Men will fall, women will be captured and continued to be used as sex slaves until they’d rather kill themselves than live another day. The world we once knew would become one of shadows and darkness, and maybe then, the remaining individuals who still exist will realize what a blessing the valley was in comparison to the surface that would be nothing but a battlefield.”

“You… make it sound as if that’s what the future holds,” Felix whispered.

“Because it is,” Lex confessed and met his glassy eyes with her calm ones. “That’s what’s in store for the world if we don’t stop Alpha Shade. There’s a limit for every shifter race, and if we allow Alpha Shade to create the alliances he wishes… well… Mother Moon’s grace upon all of us will be gone. This won’t become just a wolf shifter issue. It will destroy the ecosystem of life, and the end result… well… I’m sure you can imagine what the end will be.”

“A world of desolation,” Fynn muttered. “Shifters would go instinct, wouldn’t they?”

“Eventually,” she responded. “The wolf shifter race would probably be the first. The remaining women would have such abused wombs that carrying a wolf child or and shifter child to term would be impossible. The chances of them being female would be even less likely without Mother Moon’s grace. Women who are able to get pregnant would go into hiding or maybe even find a realm where they could live without men. It would lead to an extremely high male to female ratio among wolf shifters, and though they may mark it as a blessing in the beginning to con other shifter races into doing the same, it will come back to haunt them in a few years. With no children, shifters will grow older and more desperate. With no women, other shifter females will follow the same path as the remaining female wolves and hide away. Like a domino effect, all the races down to the humans will become affected, and hybrids will rise in population. With how sexual we shifters are, they’ll have no choice but to delve into orgies and well…everything will get even worse than it is now: and then make a list of how the packs will be worse here.”
