Thankfully, she’d been betrayed just as quickly—and by an ally she never would have thought of—which left her having to spend the last five years acting as if she’d one day be by my side again.

As if she really believed the bullshit I said regarding my lack of memories on the night of my sacrifice.

My Betas were speechless, and I couldn’t really blame them. All these little nuggets of revelations. They were lucky to be here and witness each blow of information being uncovered for their own benefit. If anyone could get a glimpse of my life and see how we reached this very moment in time, they would be confused as to which role I played and where Lex fell into all of this.

It would bring my demon some amusement, to see those confused individuals' faces while the truth was revealed and they were left hanging. None of them would be patient enough to find out the truth in a few months—and would probably give me low stars for being unable to unravel how such an end could make actual sense—but if only they were in my shoes.

To wait five fucking years before potentially getting the perfect opportunity to show the cards you’ve been hiding all this while.

I guessed that was the true difference between humans and demons. Humans and even Shifters were willing to boycott anything that didn’t show a glimpse of favorability, which only escalated when everyone encouraged it—the valley being a perfect example of their careless behaviors.

Demons have eternity to reveal their devious motives at the strike of opportunity.

“If Laura is an only child, who’s Lauren?” Wallas questioned with great interest.

“An imposter,” I elaborated. I had to fight not to smile as my next words were encouraged by my very demon. “A Tainted Time Keeper, to be exact.”

They gasped in shock before something clicked in Felix’s mind, based on his expression.

“That’s why she’s been snooping around the sacred waters! She probably wanted to make sure Lexi was dead. Obviously, if Lexi survived and somehow managed to get up the cliff, the first place she’d go is the sacred waters to heal herself.”

If only they understood the true intentions of the Tainted Time Keeper. But would we have the chance to reveal her cunning role?

“That’s when Lauren would strike,” Fynn grumbled as his eyes narrowed. “That would give her the chance to devour Lexi since she’s still a virgin, correct?”

“Correct,” I confirmed. “Lauren’s the one who murdered Laura.”

“No way!” they gasped.

“After your rejection, you’re trying to say the Tainted Time Keeper pushed Laura off the cliff and then took her place?” Wallas summarized, which was rather amusing because I was sure he’d figured that much out when he discovered me.

“A grand scheme of deceit, don’t you think?” I offered. I couldn’t fight my grin any longer. “She acted like Laura for the last five years.”

Five years of deceit just to lead us to this prime period of time.

“But what would she gain, Master?” Wallas questioned. “And why would she take the familiar?”

Now that was a good question worthy of an answer.

“She didn’t take the familiar,” I elaborated. “The familiar wished to be taken.”

“What?” Felix shook his head. “Why?”

“A tracker,” Fynn whispered as if he just figured it out. “Momo is tracking Goldibitch?”

“Exactly,” I replied. “Laura needs a glimpse of Lex’s energy.”

“As bait.” Wallas was the one who figured it out. “Is she going to use Momo as bait to get an opportunity to trap Lauren?”

“Yes, in a sense, but she’s just a bonus,” I offered with a speck of amusement. “Momo will be the perfect lure for Father.”

“Alpha Shade,” Wallas whispered. “He wants Miss Heartwell.”

“Demon or not, Lexianne is his prize and he lost her because of Nathan. Momo’s energy is entwined with Lex’s. One whiff and he’ll know she’s alive and want her back,” I revealed.

“But the primary question is, why does he want Lexianne?” Finn and Fynn asked in unison.

“Because I’m his trump card.”
