“Pains me to admit you’re a smartass, Alpha Malifer.” She tossed my title at me with a bitter huff at the end. “I’m leaving.”
“Is there anything I have to do for Lexianne?”
“All she needs is rest,” she emphasized. “As long as she remains in the valley for a few days, she'll feel a whole lot better. The lagoon boosted her with a good chunk of shadowed energy from these lands so she’ll adjust a lot easier than other new demon recruits. I’m sure you originally had training set up for her, but now that you see how powerful she currently is, you’ll have to alternate those lessons a bit.”
She sounded amused with that last part as she added, “Alpha Female 101 or something along those lines.”
Of course.
“How about her demon, wolf, and familiars?” I inquired. “Also, isn’t Baker going to come after us when he realizes he doesn’t have Lex?”
“Baker is busy attempting to find Lex’s counterpart,” she declared like it was no big deal, but my eyes widened.
“Wait. You mean her twin!”
“Mhmm,” she replied while I sensed she was holding back how much she knew about the matter. “Keep in contact with Alpha of Outcast Hollows. I believe Baker has a certain agenda and will have no choice but to pull more strings if he wants to be reunited with his Coven. When one is desperate, they’ll make mistakes, but this is the time to ensure your valley is secure and well protected, so when you need to unexpectedly leave and face your enemy head on, they won’t be able to swoop in and destroy what you cherish the most.”
She took two steps forward but paused and added, “Her wolf, demon, and familiars are fine. You may notice some personality switches here and there, but you’ll also experience them now that you won’t be using your Astras as often as you used to. A full moon is approaching though. I suggest you and the pack go for a run as a form of celebration.”
She looked back to give me a wink.
“After your important ceremony.”
With a stretch of her hands, she began to walk away.
“If you need me, I’ll show up. Until then, think about all we’ve discussed and decide on what you seek in this lifetime, Alpha Malifer Nightshade.”
Her body began to disappear into particles of black and white.
“Farewell, and thank Lexianne for the immense entertainment earlier. She’ll have to make another Voodoo Lex appearance.”
She giggled and began to sing the lullaby Momo had been singing earlier, only with quiet ViViVo’s to accompany the serenade. I watched her fade away and it prompted me to look up at the sky and notice what I thought was surely an illusion of hope.

Awaken From Madness
“Our secrets are out, so why remain enemies? You always knew I was a pretty little monster. Why are you so shocked that I’m a villain?”
My heart thrummed rapidly against my chest as the tip of my sword was pointed at the exposed flesh of my mate’s neck. Those plum purple lips quirked up in delight, but her eyes were spiraling voids that were absent of emotion.
The land around us was burning to the ground, the black flames consuming the remains of the empire we’d built together as a unit. Everyone who’d worshipped us was now dead, their ashes decorating the very black surface of debris, ash, and tainted soil.
My comrades lay on the ground next to my feet: Felix, Fynn, Wallas, Colton, and my fleet of voodoo dolls. All those who vowed to be loyal to me had perished at the hands of the woman I loved.
The woman they cherished as their Luna until she invited our enemy right in to feast on their prey.
I was left to stand there with no option of escape. There was no way I could abandon this mass grave of pack mates who laid their lives on the line just to see me survive. I’d be a coward to run away now, and my love knew it.
She knew everything.
Tears pooled in my eyes as I desperately wished this reality could be altered—that this was nothing but a nightmare.
Her laughter pierced the air, cutting through my frantic thoughts as her head tilted further up just to press against the being that appeared behind her.
My replacement… Travis Baker.
