“Did you know about what Lexianne had experienced?” I decided to ask instead.

“No,”she admitted without hesitation.“Lily probably knows. The demon side of her. Just because I’m Lexianne’s familiar doesn’t mean I get a front-row seat to all that transpires in her mind when she’s unconscious. Unlike Lily or Xiao, her wolf.”

“Why have you yet shown her this form?” I asked.

“Why haven’t you two fucked?”she tossed back, and I couldn’t help but scowl at her.

“You’re but a child. You shouldn’t be asking when the adults are going to get dirty in the bedroom,” I taunted which was the most immature shit I’d done, especially when I knew she was centuries old in comparison to me—a child in her viewpoint.

“Yup. You’ve lost your mind,”she concluded.“No wonder why Zasper and the others encouraged me to follow along. Did you hit your head too hard when you crashed into the phone booth? Must have or you’d be far more menacing than you are now.”

“My hot chocolate is gonna get cold,” I concluded as I tried to take a sip of the steaming hot liquid.

“Why do you want to die?”

I stilled at her question while my eyes had no choice but to acknowledge her emotionless stare.

“Do you undervalue yourself to the point you’re on this suicide mission in hopes you perish within the very lands you ignited by your heightened rage for revenge?”

There was nothing I could say to answer her and I bet she knew it.

“You believe I sat there for centuries, awaiting the woman who would fall and suffer the same agony you faced five years ago, just to allow you to perish by your own deadly mind?”She sounded insulted.“That my mistress faced days, weeks, months of torture for you to throw in the towel because you think you’re undeserving of her love? You disappoint me.”

“If this is your way of trying to make me feel better, it's not helping,” I pointed out the obvious but lowered the mug back to the bark surface beneath us. “I don’t have the intention to kill myself, if that’s what you’re implying.”

“That doesn’t convince me in the slightest,”she combatted.“Since the return from the explosion with the evil man, your energy has been dreadful to look at.”

“Thanks,” I muttered. “I don’t want to die.”

“Liar.”

I sighed and shook my head.

“Demons are common liars,” I commented. “I made a bargain with the Tainted Time Keeper.”

She tried to say something but held her tongue as those glowing eyes of hers widened. I waited to see if she’d articulate some sort of words of questioning, but when she didn’t, I took it as my chance to state the truth.

“I can’t die. I can’t kill myself even if I’m in a state of utter misery. Am I having an identity crisis? Yes. I’ve come to realize I created a world that stemmed from my burning desires for revenge but overlooked what my real dreams were for this valley. What I wished for my members to experience while incorporating the hopes and visions I had for myself if I became a leader of a pack that wasn’t previously under my father’s ruling was swept under the rug. It took me facing Travis and being immobilized in a situation that put all those I cared about in danger to realize it, and now I’m forced to accept that I’m madly in love with your mistress that you’ve sworn to protect because she’s the mate I always envisioned having and already lost once because of a past I can’t fully remember.”

The rambled words came out in a rush, and I let go of the mug to show her how my very hands trembled.

“I created this world out of anger, but do you know what I hid beneath those shadows? My own fear. My own anxieties and uncertainties in this world where I acted like a king on a throne when I knew within my own heart that I could never be a person who could lead. I was born to be an Alpha, yes, but not the Alpha of the world above. I knew a day like this would come, but never did I think because of one woman, my life would feel like it's in shambles and I’m on the edge of insanity,” I dared to admit. “Lexianne started this journey that revolved all around her, and yet she entered the valley at a time that all the chaos is now wrapping around me. Funny how the tides have turned and I’m now the one experiencing what it's like to be an outcast in my own fucking world.”

All she could do was stare at me as I ran my hands through my white locks and stared right back at her to say what I’m sure she wished to hear.

“My bargain revolves around me retrieving something for a ceremony. A ceremony that involves Lexianne. I need to do that in order to hold up my end of the bargain. This item isn’t just required for Lex, but it's going to be something Baker needs. I’ve fallen asleep three times already during this miniature journey and the same exact nightmare has plagued my mind. That confirms that the valley is warning me of what is destined to come to these very lands, and only I, one of the Rulers of Demon Valley, can change the route of our burning ends.”

It felt good to let it out, and maybe saying the truth would get her to try and not kill me until I finished this specific duty.

“So until I can do that, I won’t end my life, and even after that, I won’t give my enemies what they seek. No matter how frightening it is to be so vulnerable to those around me, I owe Lexianne my loyalty. I owe her plenty of years of affection after all the turmoil she experienced on my behalf. She deserves to be loved and cherished like the diamond she is, and no matter the challenges ahead, I’ll work towards being the king she needs standing by her side. Whether that side is for good or evil is not of importance to me. All that matters is that I give her the life she’s desperately craved. That starts with me shedding these fake layers of confidence and finally allowing myself to discover who I wish to be. Then you’ll never need to deal with confronting this weak side of me again.”

That’s all I had to say as I picked up my mug and stared at the steam rising.

“Does that satisfy you?”

She didn’t answer, and I once again didn’t expect her to.

I finished drinking my hot chocolate and leaned back to rest a bit longer before she finally spoke.
