"Encrypted signals have all been sent to the designated individuals,”Ruby announced.“Waiting for further command. Standby.”

“Thanks, Ruby,” Asher began. “I put yours on when I placed my hands on top of yours before we left.”

When he vowed to never lose those who are precious to him again.

“Asher,” I whispered his name, feeling grateful to have his protection.

“Having Abyss hold them off long enough for us to pass and enter the tunnel is all we need. The moment that happens, we summon Axel and Juniper and port to Nyx’s place. They go through the portal and Abyss will return to me. By the time that all happens and the Dusks try to catch up to the path we used, one of the High Council members or Zed himself would arrive to see if his move was successful.”

So it is Zed who sent the Dusks.

"Aren’t you worried these are manipulated Dusks?” I inquired.

“If they were, I have a feeling you would have smelled that odd scent you spoke of.”

“You mean the metallic bubble gum scent?” I acknowledged.

“The first time you picked up on the scent was when our borders were attacked and you faced the Dusk on your own. The second time was in West Syndicate before Beta Tanner’s murder. I have a strong feeling if the intention was to kill either of us, you would have caught onto that scent, and I think that revolves around manipulated Dusks as well,” he admitted. “We won’t know for sure until you encounter the scent a third time, but regardless of whether they’re modified or not, Abyss can handle them.”

“All four,” I reminded him as if he didn’t have eyes.

“I only need to take out two,”Abyss announced as he cracked his neck from side to side before lifting his scythe.“After the last couple of days, it’ll be good to let out some wrath.”

“Don’t get carried away,” Asher warned Abyss, who simply grinned in reply before he looked my way. “Tell Eira to watch.”

Then he was gone, which left me frowning while Eira’s irritation flooded me.

“My love is a cocky fucker of a wolf.”

Why do I feel as though you knew that already?

“I did, sadly. Having too much wisdom bestowed upon you about body language only encouraged your quick observation skills.”

And can I add the fact that you totally just swore?

"My vast vocabulary has only further expanded in the art of cussing like humans,” she commented but I could tell from her eyes that she wanted to participate in the battle ahead.

I guess it’s best I follow Alpha’s orders.

Those mismatched eyes focused on me once more, but I wondered if she sensed the disobedient urge to not follow what I, specifically, needed to do.

“Wise, child,”she praised me and I felt like she’d clued in on exactly what I was hoping she’d do.

I love when you praise me.

“I’ll aim to do it more often,”she assured me.

“That battle is about to commence,”Phyx announced, and Juniper got up and began running around Phyx in pure excitement for what was approaching —a ride with Axel.

“WOOF WOOF!”

I gripped the edge of my seat as I focused ahead, realizing the battle had truly begun because Abyss was literally jumping through the air. He landed on summoned magic circles of red flames that extinguished the moment he pushed off.

His scythe was being twirled effortlessly in his grasp as he headed straight to the Dusks that we’d probably reach in two minutes at our current speed.

“GRAWEEEERRR!” they screamed in unison. The sound was so agonizing Asher and I flinched and proceeded to lie our hands upon our ears to muffle the sound.

“Keep your hands over your ears until the sound stops,”Asher’s voice ordered through my mind.
