I sensed his energy through our tunneled connection, and I wasn’t sure I felt any better as spikes of anxiety, confusion, and annoyance vibrated back to me.

If he couldn’t speak, it had to mean something crazy was going to happen, so all I could do was say an inner prayer and hope this actually wasn’t my last rodeo in life.

“GRAWERR!” The Dusks let out a final cry before a magnitude of red tendrils shot out towards me. I was their clear target as the tendrils of probably hundreds arched in the sky. I knew that they would pierce through me in seconds.

“Enemy attack approaching. Defense mechanisms activated,”Sapphire declared.

I watched in amazement as the bike started to light up tremendously until the previously metallic blue body was now a sparkling orange and blazing with so much heat, I was surprised I didn’t burn into a puddle.

The moment the tendrils were three feet away, they crashed into a barrier of orange that emerged and surrounded the bike entirely.

I literally gawked in surprise as my hands slipped from my ears and I realized the bubble depreciated the volume of all the chaotic sounds happening outside.

“Scorching Barrier is up to full capacity. Longevity is currently at two minutes and thirty-four seconds. The enemy attack is absorbed in the back chamber for external use. Continue to remain in still status to ensure no lingering energy is left to trace,”Sapphire revealed.

Shit.

I’d literally forgotten I couldn’t do a bloody thing, and I bet Asher was a sitting duck as well wherever he was. I wanted to send Eira out to help, but I didn’t know if this was all we were going to face.

Abyss and Asher said the goal is just getting to the tunnel, so getting rid of the two Dusks in the middle is what’s necessary. I don’t know where either of them are so I can’t act without their permission or understanding of the battlefield.

This made a helpless sensation settle into my body as I bit my bottom lip. The barrier would hold for less than two minutes and I had no backup plan.

With the inability to use my own magic or shifter capabilities to get us out of here, I literally had no choice but to rely on Alpha to know the predicament I was in and hopefully save the day.

The Dusks were screaming in frustration, and their tendrils withdrew as I closed in on them.

I couldn’t tell if they were planning to retreat, but my eyes widened when those tendrils began to triple in size as they entwined with one another, becoming four massive tendrils as thick as tree trunks —that were quadruple the width of their previous thickness.

The sight immediately reminded me of the moment when I was in the pit, and the darting movement of their piercing heads heading directly for me had me frozen like a deer in headlights.

“Bracing for head-on collision. Protective protocol activated. Estimated damage upon impact, 65%.”

We’re screwed…

“Such a nuisance!”Abyss's voice suddenly boomed from above, and even the bubble couldn’t mute the intense power that radiated in his voice while the four vines that were a second from crashing into me were sliced clean through.

My eyes widened to the max to take in the sight of falling limbs and squirting flows of blood, but my view was obstructed by Abyss as he landed right on the handles of Sapphire.

His haunting eyes were focused on me.

His aura danced with power and he looked pissed, as if he’d gotten in a big ass fight while he was gone and returned to see me almost perish.

Without a word, he lifted his hand and caught his scythe a second later — twirling it in his hand before he lowered it to his side in a “whoosh” movement.

Which triggered a set of massive explosions.

I gasped as the explosive bombs were strong enough to shake the very road beneath us while the scattered body parts of two of the Dusks went flying everywhere.

The other two Dusks cried out in agony as if parts of their bodies were lost from the massive attack, but none of that mattered to us as we zoomed into the thick smoke of red that had previously been blocked.

He did it!

I was relieved to pass the obstacle without doing anything, and that feeling only grew when I caught onto the tunnel where Asher and Ruby awaited.

"Alpha,” I said in relief before feeling slightly annoyed that he didn’t give me a heads-up of whatever madness he’d planned to blow up the Dusks. Suddenly, my body felt like it was on fire and I glanced down to my arm to see the hairs on it rise instantly.

Huh?
