“I will NOT fail this mission!” the Dusk woman declared.

“Failure is minuscule in nature compared to the loss of your life at my hands,”she commented with a bit of dismissal in her authoritative voice.“Be grateful you summoned a goddess of mercy from the depths of hell and not one of the many gods in the depths of our flaming kingdom, or I assure you, defeat would be what you’d wish for all eternity in the pits of hell.”

"I-I WILL ELIMINATE THE—”

The goddess lifted a single arm, and we watched as walls of fire burst from the ground and invited bursts of lava — the attack literally inches from Dusk on both sides of her floating figure.

She shrieked at the mere heat, the intensity so grand, her body was actually beginning to melt before she flew further upward as the two lava walls descended and spilled across the road, which would make it impossible for anyone to come past our route.

The goddess's body began to shrink as lava and stone broke away and revealed a floating woman in a flaming dress. Her hair was in bountiful curls, and the indigo-purple locks carried tinsel strands of orange that glowed and levitated.

Her complexion was tanned, the shade close to copper, and she was covered in various tattoos.

She crossed her arms over her chest and cocked her head up while the flames that danced at her ankles kept her afloat.

“Little Dusk forced into the world of tainted misery. Heed my words carefully, for I’ll never again grace you with compassion if you seek to harm the Celestial who’s summoned my aid,”she began, sounding amused.“Tell your master that the world he seeks can never prosper for another shifter race is deserves to rise to the surface and reclaim what was stolen from their grasp.”

I felt Asher’s shock as well as Eira’s and Phyx’s, and my body began to inch closer to normality as my own consciousness was regaining control.

“Release your army that you seek to destroy this world that has done very little to harm you, but be warned. You are fighting a losing battle. The rise of your competitor is inevitable.”

The female Dusk looked irritated as she screeched in response, but maybe she had a bit of common sense for she pulled away and narrowed her eyes.

“You’ll pay for your interference, and I do not care if it triggers a war among the shifters.”

With that, she hastily retreated — a cry piercing the air and echoing until everything was silent.

My body began to float downward with Phyx still holding me in his grasp. When my feet landed on the ground, I still had enough strength to confront the goddess, who followed our lead and immediately spun around to peer at me.

“Selene Everly Bleu,” she repeated though her voice no longer carried the authoritative tone with it. “The Celestial who summoned Theo. Intriguing.”

“Um…” I didn’t know what to say, which made me feel utterly embarrassed.

“Save your breath. Your rivals are upon the horizon,” she declared, and we merely had to peer around her to see the flashing lights of sirens.

"Asher?” I called to my mate. He was already replacing Phyx’s place before he hugged me from behind.

“You’re in SO much trouble,” he growled, which made me groan.

“Can’t you just be like ‘Oh! My loving mate and future wife. You did something utterly chaotic that almost cost you your life but I’m so…proud…of…’”

He caught me before I could finish, but he already had me in his arms as my head rested against his chest.

“Leave now,” the goddess encouraged. “I’ll enjoy causing a brief distraction.”

“Why are you helping us?” Phyx questioned.

“You should be asking yourself why a god of your caliber is unable to properly protect the hierarchy of your master.”

Wait…what?

"I’m not a god,” Pyrrhus emphasized.

"Name?” she inquired almost mockingly.

“Pyrrhus.”

“So you don’t remember who I am it seems,” she concluded and actually sounded pleased. “Well. Maybe I can just move on then.”
