She took two steps to get right in my personal space, and with a blink, she’d conjured a blade of shadows that was now pressed against my throat.

Our eyes were locked because I wouldn’t cower in the face of death. If my end was truly knocking on my door, I wanted to embed the memory of my mate into the depths of my mind.

To get one last appreciative gaze at her attractive face, alluring eyes, flawless flesh, and perfect lips. I wanted to inhale her scent, get lost in the blazing force of her aura, and listen to her voice one last time.

My fingers craved to enjoy the silky feel of her hair, but I knew that wouldn’t be possible in this state. I was sure this final sight would invite visions of my entire spectrum of life that would allow me to remember the feel of her hair between my fingers.

"Say your last words,” she encouraged as her eyes narrowed, but that was such an easy thing to answer.

“I love you.”

That was all that mattered.

For her to know that even facing death, I loved her tremendously.

Being mated to her for the short period of time we’d shared, I’d gotten the chance to feel what it was like to love again.

To love…and be loved in return.

I’d never regret loving her because she’d taught me so much about myself that I’d forced myself to forget as if it wasn’t important to my character.

She’d encouraged me to open chests within myself that were buried deep in layers of sand, allowed me to open them up and face the traumas I tucked away as if they were hidden treasures worth burying.

Meeting Selene changed my life for the better, and even if her actions today might project a different narrative revolving around our crossed paths, I could die accepting she was the best thing that happened to me.

My words left her in a moment of shock as she peered into my eyes as if I’d lost my damn mind.

“What?”

“I love you, Selene Everly Bleu,” I repeated, and I meant every single word.

“I said your last words,” she huffed. “Not a damn confession.”

Fuck. She was damn cute when she was frustrated.

It made me smile as I kept my mouth shut, knowing my last words had to remain as they were so they carried the affection and truth she deserved to acknowledge and accept.

I could feel her heart aching as her eyes began to grow glassier by the second. It made me sad to see her on the verge of tears, and deep down, I silently begged Mother Moon for one last chance to prove to her why I’d stood by our enemy.

Why I’d dared to stand in the same proximity as her pack’s killer.

“I hate you,” she growled, and then those tears fell. I tried to continue being as grounded as possible, but my expression softened the moment those beads of water ran down her flushed cheeks.

She didn’t deserve to be in so much pain thanks to what she now remembered at the most unexpected time, but I could change it.

I could fix it if she gave me one chance to do so.

“Why should I trust you? Why should I even follow you? You can’t love me simply with words! Actions speak louder than words, Asher!”

Her anger made her aura burn like raging flames desperate to burn anyone who dared hurt their host, and it was hard to not be tempted by their beauty as they danced in their hidden grace.

“If you want me to trust you, show me! Give me one fucking sign that proves you’re on my side, Asher!”

There was my golden opportunity.

She scrutinized me with her intense gaze, and I didn’t waste another second of this brutal face-off. Leaning forward, I felt the piercing force of the blade I’d actually forgotten was against my very flesh, but the pain was nothing in comparison to my mate thinking I was her enemy.

Her eyes widened despite her previous intention of slicing this very blade through my neck, and when she tried to pull back her hand, I simply grasped her wrist to stop her from trying.
