“Then she told us she’d be right back and vowed to create a vision of the world where Shadowborns can truly feel at home,” he revealed. “And she said something about getting us to blackmail you for some batteries.”

Of course, she did.

Mother laughed at that one and shook her head.

“I won’t even ask what that revolves around,” she concluded and ran her hands through my hair while Father patted my shoulder.

I looked between the both of them as they peered at me with the biggest grins I’d ever seen upon their faces.

“Welcome home, our son,” they said together.

I hugged them both, and the three of us sat in the midst of this field with the twinkling stars above.

“I’m home,” I whispered.

I’ve returned…for the better.

CHAPTER5

I’ve Missed You, Mini Shadow

~SELENE~

“They said to go down this path,” I voiced to myself as I nervously glanced around while taking cautious steps.

The Shadow Realm was absolutely breathtaking, even though I’d only seen purple and green shades of grass and the sky that twinkled with so many cooler shade colors that it made my heart almost giddy while my mind thought of the various possibilities that could blossom in this world.

I couldn’t remember when I’d gone Faerie, so I had nothing to compare to when it came to another universal plane, but thus far, the possibilities really were endless.

What I loved the most as of now was the immense peacefulness that hummed through me when I woke up to the sight of the vast sky with twinkling lights. Nyx’s chanting resonated with my very soul; the hymns sent me through a timeline of various timelines where our people would dance and sing hymns of praise.

Our chants were strong and loud, and our attire contained various markings both big and small. Depending on the occasion, we wore either black or white, and the magnitude of traditions and acceptance within our community was unimaginable.

I thought it was truly a dream, but through glimpses of my pack around me, I got moments where I saw through the eyes of another and was able to witness my little self as I embraced our culture and the powers that came along with it.

There were instances with Mother, the twins, our Elders, and of course, Father. So many memories that I’d forgotten, but I got a taste of how loved I was surrounded by those who truly cherished my existence.

Through it all, I wondered how different my life would have been if I was allowed to grow up surrounded by such adoration. If I’d felt like I belonged and embraced every aspect of myself without a single doubt.

Would I be the same individual I am today? Would my morals be the same, or would things have shifted for the better? Or the worse?

It felt odd to have Phyx, Juniper, and Eira present. My best guess was that this journey was for us to walk upon. If that was the case, I could only be glad Nyx took us in and provided shelter that would ensure we were practically wiped off the planet for a few days.

Maybe that would cause our enemies to go on a panic spree and show their true colors.

My feet came to a stop just as my eyes fell upon the man I’d been searching for. Goosebumps emerged along my arms and legs, and I took a nervous breath as I ended up tapping my feet in place as if I didn’t know whether to walk, run, or simply stand there and admire the back of my father, who I’d loved and lost.

As if sensing my presence, he turned around until our eyes locked, and nothing could stop me from dashing forward — my body crashing into his open arms once more.

“I knew you’d return,” he greeted and spun me around, his chuckle only making me hug him with my entire body as I broke down in sobs. “Welcome home, Mini Shadow. Did you miss me so much already?”

“Daddy,” I cried into his shoulder, and he carried me like I was nothing while he rubbed my back comfortingly.

“It’s good to be able to hold you like this,” he whispered to himself. “How you’ve grown, Selene. I’m sure there is a lot to discuss.”

I nodded into his shoulder but didn’t feel the need to rush myself. He held me for as long as I needed him to until there were no more tears to be shed. When I calmed down, he offered his hand and I took it with ease. The two of us then began to walk through the shadow oasis.

“Now, where is your husband?” he pondered, which made me choke on my own saliva before I coughed and cleared my throat.
