I stared at him in confusion but I felt my mind being tugged away.

“Why Father?” I asked quickly, attempting to stay concentrated, but the world was slipping away — as was his image.

“Go,” he encouraged, realizing I was struggling to remain. “Ask one of the council members before you forget.”

I wanted to answer, but before I could, I was back and gasping for breath just as gurgling coughs and heaves came from beneath me.

Shit! Mercury!

I forced my top half to rise up just in time as Xenon quickly moved Mercury to the side as she gasped and coughed out blood and water.

“Shit,” I cursed as the world was spinning, but I was fighting to remain consequences. “Xenon.”

He looked my way as I tried to stand up, but I suddenly sensed something moving to my left, which made Xenon scream.

“MOVE SELENE!”

I didn’t listen because a shot of anger raged through me with so much intensity, it shot out with a lift of my hand that conjured a shield of white flames.

My eyes locked onto those haunting ones that reminded me of that fateful memory.

The eyes of the bandaged man who was hungry to see my demise.

“Do not touch her.”The voice that left my lips wasn’t my own, and I couldn’t decipher it at all because it was unfamiliar, and yet my body tingled with a sense of pride.

The man from afar was forced to move to the side as a giant spear of teal raced past him and shattered into ice shards that managed to dab into his flesh. The miniature wounds didn’t bother him, his eyes still on me as I realized Xenon was as close to my side as my body would allow.

The distraction was enough to tug me out of my dazed state, which in turn made my eyes droop just like my body. Xenon caught me not a second later, but I fought to stay awake as I shook my head which felt far too heavy.

“I’m fine,” I urged and tried to get up. Xenon didn’t combat me like I felt he normally would, his eyes still on our enemy as he helped me up with ease.

I looked at the man once more, but I noticed the portal that was beginning to form behind him.

“Twenty-four hours and I’ll ensure this world crumbles,” he vowed. “You won’t revive those shadowed wastes, and you definitely won’t encourage the rise of the Howling Heir!”

With that, he vanished in the shadows, which left us to catch our breaths before I noticed something I hadn’t before.

A third body…

“Cinder?” I whispered and my eyes immediately widened as I realized the Mageri wolf was literally lying there.

Lifeless.

“Cinder?!” I screamed and tried to run to her, but Xenon stopped me.

“No.”

“What do you mean no?!” I shrieked. “I can save her! I helped Kenzo and Mercury! I can save her, Xenon!”

“That’s what she wants!”

“Of course, that’s what she wants?! She wants to live!”

“She wants you dead!”

“I can’t die!” I countered and managed to get out of his hold and take three steps before he literally scooped me up.

“NO!”
