“Hmph,” Xenon commented as he glanced at the woman whose red wings were out. They carried sparks of red which proved Asta was mad.

Very mad.

“As long as he—” his finger pointed my way, “doesn’t punch me again.”

I rolled my eyes but ended up crossing my arms over my chest because I didn’t want to cross the lines with a mad Asta. Zero would never condemn me for my actions, but the Blood Valkyrie only scattered to Selene in the realms of mercilessness.

“Fine.” That was the only word I could manage as I waited for what he was going to say.

“You can speak freely, Xenon,” Asta declared. “You are protected under the oath of the High Council.”

This fucker had to have good reasoning for how he was currently getting Asta Minovera’s favor right now.

“I wasn’t mingling with the imposter,” he began as he lifted his head so he could stare straight at me. “I was led astray, just like Selene. My…mate sensed something odd in the atmosphere and knows my line of work. He requested that I check to see if everything was okay and if I didn’t see anything suspicious just to alert Azu or Mecury so they could look into it as a safety precaution since he’s aware we have a few guests staying in East Syndicate. I found Azu…Imposter Azu mere seconds before Bleu showed up and I went along with what he was saying so I wouldn’t worry Selene,” he revealed. “It wasn’t until after we got attacked and arrived to see Amaya was dead that Bleu clicked on the fact that during our conversation the Imposter Azu laughed yet no calamity happened. We realized it was an imposter and proceeded to race over to find Mercury when the real Azu was showing signs of distress.”

He paused as if he was reliving the events that happened in his mind.

“When we arrived, everything was bloody and the same cuts you saw that killed Amaya were all over Kenzo and Mercury as well as a few deep wounds. Bleu proceeded to help Kenzo first before she realized Mercury was injured as well. She couldn’t stay still and let Mercury perish so she helped give her mouth-to-mouth while I did compressions. Nothing was working, so the best solution was encouraging her to use her Celestial powers to try to reclaim Mercury’s soul before it ascended. She managed to revive Mercury before Zed tried to take her out,” he explained and paused.

He looked angry, as if he couldn’t wait to pulverize the man in question.

“However, a white flame ignited out of nowhere and created a shield around Bleu. It was clearly another entity, and the voice that spoke didn’t belong to Bleu. I tried to pierce Zed with an ice spear, but he moved too quickly. He then declared that in 24 hours, the world would crumble and he’d ensure none would be able to revive the Shadowborns. Most importantly, he said he’d never encourage the rise of the Howling Heir.”

“Howling Heir?” Axel commented and looked at me and Abyss as if we’d know what Zed was referring to.

We ended up glancing at Zero, who seemed deep in thought, while Asta maintained her emotionless expression. Azu seemed just as intrigued as we did but remained quiet.

“He disappeared then,” Xenon admitted. “Selene then noticed Cinder’s body and wished to revive her as well, but I stopped her.”

“Why?” I had to know why he’d let a little pup perish.

Xenon looked my way.

“Who do you think is more important?”

“Selene’s immortal,” I pointed out the obvious.

“Bleu isn’t the one I’m referring to in this equation.”

We shared a hard look before he huffed and glanced away.

“I told Selene if she tried to revive Cinder, she’d pay the ultimate price of losing her baby,” he revealed, and I remained completely still.

He noticed my stillness, and let out another sigh as his tense shoulders began to relax.

“Selene’s pregnant, Asher. I have no clue why none of you noticed, but her aura is different. There was never white in her aura. Blue, orange, black? Sure. White? White is an aura that’s given to descendants of angels, seers, and beings blessed to heal and revive, like Celestials and unborn children who carry an aura of innocence. The reason why I had a strong feeling she was probably pregnant versus assuming it was due to her Celestial traits was because I’d caught a glimpse of her training session when she was fighting Mercury. She summoned a white flaming sword and was talking to Mercury about it. I didn’t stay longer to hear their conversation seeing as I was trying to determine if there was truly a threat worthy enough of interrupting Mercury’s training with Bleu.”

Silence descended upon the room, which encouraged him to continue.

“She just found out that she was pregnant and I told her that this was the real reason why I didn’t wish for her to revive Cinder for Amaya and I have been secret agents under Asta’s command, attempting to track the killer of the Betas,” he revealed. “Cinder was the top suspect.”

“Cinder was the culprit behind attempting to kill all the Betas?” Axel sounded like he couldn’t believe this shit, and I didn’t blame him. I couldn’t quite wrap my head around it either.

“Unexpected, huh?” Xenon commented and sighed. “She informed Zed that she had a strong feeling you two would tie the knot behind closed doors and attempt to get pregnant before coming out to the public. The news of you two potentially aiming to have a child prompted him to lose his patience.”

“Why?” I asked.

“You and Selene are both Howling Shadowborns. When two Howlings have a child, normally the child will become a Celestial like Selene,” he revealed. “If they’re a girl.”
