“And if they’re a boy?” Azu finally spoke up, his voice so raw and scratchy like he was on the verge of losing it.

“That child is deemed a Howling Heir,” he declared. “One of the strongest Shadowborns in its class. Stronger than his parents. He’ll automatically be an Alpha, with the capabilities of not only summoning gods when his magic is at the level to do so, but more importantly, he’ll be able to revive the lost Shadowborns,” he revealed. “Without a limit.”

“Without…a limit,” I whispered.

“He’ll be able to revive everyone in the Shadow Realm or rule it entirely if he wished. You’ve essentially created a shadow god without realizing it, for Howling Heirs can only be created within the Shadow Realm.”

“Meaning he’s of royalty.” My voice barely hit the air, but he heard it.

“The true first of the Shadow Realm and probably not the last,” he revealed. “Zed doesn’t give a shit about what can be done in the Shadow Realm. He cares about preventing you and Selene from giving birth, which is why he retreated without killing Selene. He knew she’d perish the moment she tried to revive Cinder after watching her help Kenzo and Mercury. His end game is for you to lose the baby, but in a way that doesn’t mark him as the culprit of the loss.”

“Then Selene…” I struggled to speak as I quickly looked to Asta, whose expression softened just a bit as she acknowledged my frightened expression.

“Selene is in stable condition,” she announced. “As are Kenzo and Mercury. Selene and Kenzo should wake up in an hour or two, based on Nyx’s predictions. Mercury will need a lot more time to recover from her injuries, but it’s predicted she should make a full recovery thanks to Selene’s aid.”

She paused and tried to smile, even though it was just slightly.

“Baby Blue is fine as well,” she assured me. “He’s the reason why Selene will be awake a lot sooner than she should be.”

“The baby is empowering her?” Azu quietly inquired.

“Looks that way,” Asta declared in seriousness. “He’s a strong one. Strong enough for Zed and Xenon to pick up on his aura so quickly. I overlooked it because Selene is a Celestial, but if she’s using moves involving white flames, then it’s clearly your child is performing such tricks to protect his mom.”

I took a deep breath. I didn’t realize someone was behind me until their hand gently pressed against my back to keep me standing.

“Well, it’s certainly a good thing Xenon was there to help Selene out.” Tobias’s voice confirmed his presence as he ensured I could stand on my own before he moved to my side — his expression hardened to not show just how to hurt he really was.

With Cinder’s death…and betrayal.

"We should be thanking Xenon for helping Selene. I finished checking the cameras and the footage retrieved from Kenzo’s camera. Xenon helped Selene swim back to the surface when she was struggling and carried her back to this section of East Syndicate, where they helped Kenzo and Mercury. As for the battle, it’s clear Zed and Cinder were present. Zed battled Mercury while Cinder fought Kenzo,” he revealed. “The reason for Cinder’s death was a combination of Zed’s final attack that wiped all three of them out, and the final blow that killed her…” He trailed off as he quickly fought to compose himself. “Theo finished her off.”

“Theo?” Asta inquired. Zero was now next to her while Azu walked over to stand on my right side, which encouraged Axel and Abyss to retreat.

I needed to conserve some energy, especially with this new information.

“Looks like he knew what was happening and didn’t align with her underlying motives. He killed her, which is why her heart is practically burned inside her. Her death extinguished the flames that bonded him to this world, so I can only assume he’s returned to the depths of hell where he’ll resort back to his duties in the realms of gods and goddesses,” Tobias explained. “But we now can connect the dots as to why she had the book, to begin with. She was working with my father and was going to marry that Italian mafia douche so they could rise into power at North Syndicate and exile Asher and Selene. That was their plan at least. They didn’t realize the two were going to rise to their chairs of the High Council.”

Fuck…

It was a full-circle moment.

“What now?” Azu asked, and we looked at Asta and Zero.

“We need to take Zed out ASAP,” Zero declared.

“A global warrant has been made for his arrest. The other members of the Mortem Council of Supernaturals are in our custody,” Asta declared.

“Only Zed remains, and we already know what he’s after.”

“He’ll be back for Selene,” I voiced the obvious. It made my body hot with rage. I needed to protect her —and our son —at all costs.

“And what a perfect way to catch him,” Xenon declared, which drew our attention to him.

“You want me to put my wife and child in danger again?” I snarled.

“No.” He didn’t appear threatened by my anger. “You need to bring your wife and child to the Shadow Realm and wait.”

“Wait?” Tobias questioned.
