He turned around to walk away but paused.

“Xenon had a sister long ago,” he revealed, which was surprising. “She ended up dying during childbirth.”

My heart sank.

"He envies Selene’s power, but seeing her pregnant and struggling hit a nerve of emotion he hasn’t allowed to peak out in a very long time, Asher,” Zero acknowledged and looked over his shoulder at me. “He’s acted the way he has all with the intention of protecting Selene. I suggest you make amends when all of this is over.”

He looked away and shrugged ever so slightly as black wings emerged from his back.

“He could be a good uncle one day.”

With that, he walked into a swirling portal, leaving me with his commentary and congratulations.

“Damn,” I whispered and took a steady breath before I nodded to myself with new found determination.

He won’t steal what’s mine. He won’t hurt my family.

CHAPTER12

Rise Of The Shadowborns: Part Two

~SELENE~

Hymns of chanting drifted to my ears, and the sensation of peace hummed through me.

Being enveloped in warmth and the scent of myrrh made me feel so relaxed as I began to rise from the depths of slumber into wakefulness.

It didn’t take long to open my eyes, and when I did, the vision of Asher came into view. He hadn’t realized I was awake yet, his eyes looking afar as if he was thinking of so many things at once that he couldn’t decipher which one was most important.

I stared for a long time, just lost in the sensation of his emotions that filtered through me. At first, I thought he was sad, but as I watched in silence, I realized the overwhelming happiness building inside him with tingles of nervousness, uncertainty, and the need to protect what he cherished.

When his eyes finally lowered, they locked on mine and widened as he realized I was awake, but neither of us said anything.

We just stared until I knew.

He knew.

I didn’t hold it against Xenon since he had no choice but to tell Asher and the others since the situation kinda gave of us no choice but to do so, but what was I going to say?

Our wedding night led to creating a baby? Surprise, we’re having a baby? How do you discuss bringing life into the world when it wasn’t even planned?

I opened my mouth to say something — words of encouragement that could help us both with this sudden transition that made it feel like we were about to jump out of a damn plane of sorts — but as I continued to stare at him, I realized how scared I was.

Scared…and fucking happy.

Before I knew it, tears were flowing down my cheeks like open faucets, and the first sound that left my lips was a sob.

He smiled then, his sadness at seeing me shedding tears as pure as his happiness that we’d somehow been blessed enough to bring a child into this fucked-up world.

He cradled me against him, hugging me tightly as we ended up crying together.

I felt his pride. He was so fucking proud of me; it was the most overwhelming yet joyous feeling I’d experienced.

It was amazing to think our journey had led us down this path, and now we were almost at some sort of finish line that would result in us bringing life into this world.

Could this open the door to more children? A family? A new world for us to raise our children?

When we’d shed every tear, we allowed ourselves to calm down while I acknowledged that we were back in the Shadow Realm.
