“You mean to make a sort of task force?”

“Well, it could be called that for those who apply to protect our Syndicates from threats, which includes those in the council itself, but maybe an institute? Shifter Institute?”

He genuinely seemed intrigued by it, and I shrugged and quickly added, “I know this is super random, but I’m just thinking of the fact that we’re obviously going to have no choice but to join the council and…I guess I feel as though Zero and Asta are carrying so much burden with all the chaos happening in the Syndicates. Obviously, my idea may take a bit to implement so it may not even be helpful, but what if with the reconstruction of Syndicates, we present a higher level of Institute that will debut with taking those from each Syndicate who have already proven they have good intentions and thrive for a higher level of growth and commitment. Shifters who genuinely love their Syndicates but also want to protect our world from various dangers, like in this case, the mutated Red Dusks that keep popping up?”

“You want to give the new Syndicate leaders no choice but to start from scratch,” he announced, clearly following what I was trying to make sense of myself. “Take those who’ve been worthy of our training and put them in a place that we can not only monitor more closely due to the significant size reduction of shifters, but that will also aid in protecting Shifter City and other establishments like the Grand Library.”

“Yes.” He was catching on to my vision. “If the new Shifter Syndicate leaders realize they’re starting from scratch with shifters that aren’t even strong enough to be of value to them or whatever underlying motives they carry, they’ll feel like it’s a burden to commit to.”

“And then they’ll want to back out of it,” Asher muttered. “What happens then?”

“To be honest, I’m not sure,” I admitted. “It would prove their intentions were shallow, which is what we’d need to prove whatever conspiracy they were trying to uphold by trying to marry Cinder off to that Italian mob Alpha.”

“Alpha Alessandro,” Asher muttered like he had something bitter in his mouth. “A thorn in my side that needs to be gotten rid of.”

“Oh.” I paused to stare at him before I grinned seductively and leaned in to whisper, “Can I come with you on one of your mafia adventures?”

He arched an eyebrow at me and I knew he was going to deny me before the words even left his mouth.

“C’mon.”

“You’re changing the topic.”

“Yes, because I want to feel like the typical mafia FMC that gets caught up in her lover’s mafia shit and has to defend herself until her man comes in with guns and all to save the day and rescue her.”

He groaned. “You’d rescue yourself before I made it,” he muttered.

“Now…you’re not wrong, but this is me trying to live out my mafia fantasy so I’d hold off trying to kick ass without you showing up with the defensive force to save my ass.”

“No.”

“Asher,” I whined and blinked my eyes innocently, knowing he wouldn’t be able to resist for long. He scowled in return. The silence that followed only tipped him closer and closer to submitting to my plea until he had no choice.

“Ugh fine.”

“Score!”

“After everything with the Dusk threat is over with.”

“That’s like eons from now,” I whined.

“Baby, I can’t handle you potentially dying whenever you get ‘tugged’ into trouble and you getting tangled in my mafia drama,” he complained. “You’ve got to choose one.”

“I choose you,” I purred and ended up wrapping my arms around his neck and brushing my lips against his. “So that means both, right?”

“You’re too much,” he grumbled but kissed me.

“You love that about me,” I purred with a wink.

“What do you wish to do instead of returning to East Syndicate?” he re-routed the question back to what was currently our priority seeing as time was ticking.

“I want to go back there.” My voice barely pierced the air as I ended up hugging him again. I knew the four walls surrounding us were shielded to ensure our words didn’t seep outside and our very presence was concealed, but the weight of what I’d witnessed rested upon my shoulders.

As if it was now my duty to keep what we’d seen and experienced a secret from the atmosphere itself.

Asher was quiet as he hugged me back, and the two of us stood there in place as I allowed myself to speak my mind once more.

“It’s very clear that entering that place is taxing on my body when I return, but the idea of experiencing what we just did and leaving them there…” I took a breath to stop myself from getting emotional yet again.
