"We're business partners," said Chris, convincing himself that the only reason he was explaining this to her boyfriend was that he didn't want to see her hurting. "It's just good publicity."

Xavier looked at him, then nodded. "I wouldn't know."

Obviously.

"Anyway, I have to head out." He looked at his watch, then at his girl. "Will you be okay?"

She nodded, but Xavier replied, "Why wouldn't she be?"

He stared him down. "Just asking."You son of a bitch.

Xavier looked at her and smiled. "I'm here for her now."

"Of course."

He managed a smile before leaving, not once attempting to glance back at Giselle. He couldn't face her anymore.

Tomorrow, he'd make her smile. It'd be perfect.

Chapter 28

Chris was coming to pick her up in two hours, and Giselle had nothing to wear. It was a charity event. She didn't even know what was expected of her or how she was supposed to dress. Though she knew that neither her jeans and t-shirt nor her sundresses would be a good look for a black-tie event.

She searched through her walk-in closet for dresses but didn't like anything from what she had. She did have gowns that she'd wear to weddings or formal events, but none of them looked good to her today. Frustrated, she walked out and grabbed her phone to call Chris.

He picked up instantly, and she wondered if he was waiting for her to call him in distress.

"I have nothing to wear!"

He had the audacity to laugh. "I didn't know it would take you this long to call."

"And you were waiting because...?" she asked.

"Just wait for it. You'll like it."

"Like what?"

He cut the call.

"Hello?" she said, then looked at the screen. "What?"

There was a knock at the door and Ana came wearing her usual jeans and t-shirt under her apron. She'd been hired as her lady’s maid by Abbott a few months after Rose had died. She'd thought that the move was too 1950s but her father wouldn't listen.

Since Abbott's demise, Giselle had cut down on the staff drastically. They were still given their monthly salaries, but she'd asked them to come only when needed. Ana became the housekeeper, who handled everything for her, even the rest of the staff.

"Hey," said Giselle, smiling. "What's up?"

"Chris has left this for you," she said, handing her a big bag.

"Oh." She took the bag and retrieved the box inside. "When?"

"The same day he brought the invitation for today's event. He asked me to give this to you but only when he instructed." She smiled knowingly. "He just called."

"Of course." Giselle shook her head, an amused smile playing on her lips.

"I'll leave you to it," said Ana. "Do you need anything else, miss?"

"No, I don't think so. You can leave early today if you want. I won't be home till late. Oh, and I've left some chocolates for your daughters on the dining table. Don't forget to take them."
