Pure fear kept her from moving. She was a desk jockey, a number cruncher, a tech-head extraordinaire. What had she been thinking, believing she could handle this?

“Red? Red!” He grabbed her shoulders and shook her. “You need to climb onto my back. Now!”

He faced away from her and ducked so she could place her arms around his neck. Shaking, she did as he’d asked, then squeaked when he stood and her feet dangled in the air. “For your information, this is highly dangerous.”

“Better than getting taken into custody. Hang on.” He backed up across the length of the roof, then sprinted forward and leapt.

She squeaked and buried her face in the back of his neck as he caught and held the tree branch, grunting with the effort.

Somehow, she’d lifted her thighs so her legs gripped his waist tight. No way was she letting go. No way in hell.

“Be careful,” she whispered.

“Always.” She could feel his body moving under hers as he climbed along the branch, but she didn’t look around until they reached the thick trunk. They held their breath in the shadows as a member of the FBI team beamed a flashlight out the window, searching for suspects. Luckily, the new leaves were thick, and the light skimmed by them without stopping. Beneath her palms, she could feel the sheer strength and solidness of Scotty’s form. He chuckled, and the rich sound warmed her, despite the situation. “You keep feeling me up like that, Red, and we’re going to be looking at a different kind of excitement.”

Heat flooded her cheeks, and she narrowed her eyes. “Just get us out of here.”

“Yes, ma’am.” He shimmied them down the trunk of the tree, then ducked again so she could climb off him while he brushed bits of bark from his clothes. “All right. Ready?”

“Where are we going?”

“Away from here sounds like a good starting point.”

“Agreed.” Taking either of their vehicles would’ve been too risky, with agents still swarming around, so walking was their best bet. She took his hand, and they stole off down the street.

An hour later, they strolled through the empty Lincoln Memorial hand in hand, as slivers of pink and gold streaked the horizon and a few birds twittered. After spending the night with Hayley, getting to know her, being inside her, Scotty was more confused than ever. He’d never been so drawn to a woman before—but he’d also never felt so unsure as to where he stood. She was definitely attracted to him, and she seemed to trust him—but could he be sure that she was telling him everything?

“How’d you know that FBI squad was coming?” he asked.

“I have a monitor on my computer. Lets me know when the Bureau’s system has me locked and loaded—a safeguard when I’m hacking. But I guess I was too far in the zone tonight. I didn’t notice I’d been in so long.”

“Huh.” He frowned. “You hack into your employer’s stuff often?”

“No.” She turned away, adjusting the bag over her shoulder. “Yes. Sometimes.”

They walked a bit farther. He’d done his usual inspection as they’d walked, and he knew the place was deserted, but he still couldn’t shake the feeling they were being watched. He rubbed the nape of his neck, the tiny hairs prickling, his instincts flaring.

But every time he tried to concentrate on checking for tails, he got distracted by her nearness, her scent—the memory of how it felt to hold her in his arms. If he closed his eyes, he could still feel her hips in his hands, taste her arousal on his lips, revel in the warm, wet embrace of her body around his. He crossed his arms and changed subjects. “So, why did you?”

“Why did I what?”

“Go rogue.”

“Besides the fact that I consider myself a good citizen and don’t like the idea of my government framing innocent people?” Hayley exhaled and squinted at the ground. “Not to mention, I really couldn’t believe someone I was so attracted to was involved in killing one of his buddies, so…”

Scotty grinned. Truth was, sleeping with her had probably been a huge judgment error from a logistical perspective, but damn if he could bring himself to regret it. “Yeah, the sex was pretty hot. I didn’t know a woman could do that with her—”

She kissed him, shutting him up. He deepened the caress, sweeping his tongue into her mouth to taste her spicy sweetness once more. Hayley was like a drug, risky and forbidden, but God what a rush.

Her wanton groan urged his libido higher. He’d always loved sex, and he’d never found a partner who could keep up with him. Until now, it seemed. She clutched the front of his shirt, then reached lower to stroke his aching cock through his jeans, and he damned near embarrassed himself in public. He could take her, right here, right now, and she’d joyfully go along for the ride.

Goddamn, that was hot.Toohot for him to be able to concentrate or be on his guard—and that was what he needed to be when they were in an open, unsecured location.

He broke off the kiss. She was panting, and her lips were parted and wet. From him. Scotty couldn’t resist the flush of masculine pride those thoughts created.

“We need to come up with a plan, Red.” He raked his hands through his hair and did his best to get his own raging hormones back under control. Times like these demanded a cool head and clear vision. Right now, his head pounded with blood and lust, and the only thing he could envision was Hayley naked, her long legs wrapped around his waist as he drove them both toward orgasm.
