“It’s locked.” I drop my forehead to hers and line myself up, sliding back in. “Shush,” I warn, easing in and out at a ridiculously slow pace.

“Cain, the police are here,” Justine announces, knocking on the door.

Groaning, I ram myself to the hilt and hold myself deep for a second, enjoying the feel of my girl wrapped so snuggly around me. I issue Lauren with an apologetic smile, slowly easing out and standing, helping to sort her skirt out before zipping my trousers. I walk to the door, but Lauren grabs my hand and shakes her head. “Cain?” she pleads.

“It’s fine. I was planning to tell her, anyway.”

With a grimace, Lauren stands off to the side, shifting awkwardly as I unlock the door and let my PA in. “What's going on?” She strides straight in. “You never lock the do—” Her eyes meet Lauren’s and widen. “Shit,” she blurts.

“Justine, this is Lauren, my girlfriend.” Holding out my hand to Lauren, I wait for her to take it and pull her to me. “This is Justine, my PA.”

“Hello,” Lauren whispers, then clears her throat. “It’s nice to meet you.” She holds out her hand, but Justine looks at it like she might pick up an incurable disease. Laughing awkwardly, Lauren drops it, and I kiss her shoulder.

“How long?” Justine asks.

“A little while.”

Nodding, she comes to terms with what she has walked in on. No doubt going over the series of events of the past few weeks. “Well, Lauren, it’s nice to officially meet you.”

“Likewise. I’ll speak to you later.” Lauren attempts to dash away, but I snag her back and kiss her softly. “Stop it.” She blushes.

My grin is lopsided. “Do your laundry,” I admonish.

I wait for Lauren to leave until I turn to face Justine. “Until today, I never crossed the line,” I mutter when I find her glowering at me.

“We have enough to deal with. I can’t be fending off more drama if this comes out. Keep that in your pants.” She points to my trousers with her pen.

“Yes, Ma’am.”

She makes a sound in the back of her throat. “And don’t call me that. You make me feel old. The police are in meeting room three.”

“Have you called Danvers?”

“He’s on the way.”

Chapter28

Lauren

It’s been several days since Cain called me up to his office, and our contact has been short and sweet. What with Royce and Kat, he is snowed under, and any contact is strictly kept to facetime and the odd text. I miss him, despite seeing him every day. I crave his presence, but mostly, I hate that I can't be there for him when everything is so chaotic around us. I worry if he is sleeping, although his nightmare seems to have bothered me more than him.

The hotel has hit an all-new record since his step-father’s arrest. Everyone wants to stay at The Carson-Ivory. We’ve been vetting guests due to the influx of bookings, and I’ve noticed more than one socialite has been loitering in the foyer, dolled up to the nines. I’ve never been insecure or overly untrustworthy, and I vowed not to let Martin’s or Kristy’s betrayal alter that, but seeing the preened women vying for a certain man’s attention has me making an extra effort in the mornings. I had left his office with an ache in my chest after he referred to me as his girlfriend.

I watch as one woman with a willowy figure and long silky blonde hair keeps checking the elevator every time it opens. She’s beautiful, classically so, with delicate features and golden skin. I can imagine Cain with someone like her. They would look phenomenal together, a real powerhouse.

My phone pings, disrupting my thoughts. Slipping it out of my pocket, I find a text from Cain.

What’s got you frowning so hard, pretty girl?

Smirking, I stare at the central camera and roll my eyes.

Haven’t you got any work to do?

Yes, I’m a very busy and important man. In fact, after your little stunt the other day, I’ve been working tirelessly on a new deal. I've decided I’m holding your underwear hostage…all of it. X

Scoffing loudly, I tap a quick reply whilst Beryl is busy arranging a taxi for a guest.

You expect me to work without any underwear on?
