He lifted his chin. “He says I’m special.”

She gave him a sad smile. “Do you really believe him? Or do you justwantto believe him?”

He didn’t say anything and she dropped it. Her father was a master manipulator. Of course the poor guy believed it. That’s what her dad counted on with everyone around him.

She still wondered how he was still married to her mother. Sometimes. Though now she was inclined to believe they deserved each other.

The musicians grew quiet as two men walked onto the stage, along with Maestro Holden, holding violins as the audience applauded. Her breath caught in her throat.

Her dream and her nightmare stood on stage next to one another.

Her heart pounded in her chest, wanting to run away, wanting to stay.

Mark was here! Standing next to Rafael. How was this possible? Why hadn’t he told her where he was going?

Why would he? She was supposed to be back home in DC, not in LA, the place she had sworn she’d never visit again.

Oh, what was she going to do? How could she possibly explain why she was here with David as his... as his assistant?

She buried her face in her hands, not wanting to see either man. One because of the nightmares of her past, the other because of the tiny spark of hope for a future.

If Mark found out she was here, there was no escaping him finding out about her and David.

Oh, God, what was she supposed to do?

She looked out over the audience and saw David watching her. He raised his eyebrows and then tapped something into his phone. A moment later, her phone buzzed.

David Powell

Are you okay?

He looked up at her.

She bit her lip and looked back at the stage. David knew about Rafael. A little. After the confrontation with her dad, if it had just been Rafael, she’d be okay.

Mostly.

But with Mark up there?

She sighed and nodded, forcing a smile.

He shook his head with a soft smile and again tapped into his phone. A moment later her phone buzzed again.

David Powell

Are you lying?

She closed her eyes and nodded.

David Powell

Do you want to leave?

David was so kind. She didn’t want to embarrass him. He deserved better. She could be brave for him.

Emily Dawson

I’ll be okay. It’s just a shock.
