“Who... man?” she whispered. It didn’t hurt too bad to whisper.

Mark’s brows drew together and he gave a small smile. “The man who beat the shit out of that other guy?”

“Y-yes.”

“That’s my friend, Seth. He...” Mark smiled. “He was one of the guys who rescued my parents when my mom was pregnant with me. He came to help me find you.”

“D-David?”

“He went downstairs with the others.” Mark pressed his lips together. “I don’t like you being in pain.”

“M-me either.”

Mark chuckled then blew out a breath. “Is there anything I can do?”

Emily gasped in pain as she shifted and reached her hand to him, wiggling her fingers, then fisted her hand, doubting he’dwant to hold her hand.

“I don’t want to hurt you.”

“Hurts anyway.”

He took her hand and held it lightly and she smiled as tears filled her eyes. “I’m sorry,” she whispered.

“For what?”

“B-betrayal.”

Mark’s eyes burned and he bit his lip. “You didn’t do anything wrong, Em. I was wrong to think you did.”

She blinked several times. “Liked... it.”

“Did you? Or was it the drugs?”

She closed her eyes. Was it the drugs or was it her? Could a drug make her feel something she didn’t want to feel? How could it? The drugs weren’t wrong when she was here the first time with Rafael. She’d liked it. Kind of. She liked the attention. “Don’t know,” she whispered.

“I don’t believe you would do this on your own,” Mark said, his voice firm. “You didn’t leave the theater by choice, did you?”

She opened her eyes. “No. Usher... told me you wanted to...” She sucked in a shallow breath. “... see me.” A shiver wracked her body and she groaned.

“Are you cold?”

She gave a slight nod.

“Do you want a blanket?”

“No. Hurt.”

“I’m so sorry,” he said in a soft voice. “Can you sleep?”

“Maybe.”

“Close your eyes. I’ll stay with you until you’re able to move.”

“Why?”

His face softened. “Because I love you.”

“Still?”
