“You’re welcome. Are you sure you don’t want something to eat?” he says as he sets the cup on the floor next to him.

I shake my head.

“Is the vulnerability scary?” he asks when he straightens up.

“Yes,” I say. “It’s also kind of hot, I guess.”

“Why?” he asks, his brown eyes piercing. God, he’s also really hot, and he’s only inches away from me. I could really just lean forward and kiss him. There is barely any space between us. I could…but he looks so concerned and like he really wants to know my answer.

This isn’t like when he checked me out of the mental hospital. He’s really worried about me. It makes my heart swell–the concern in his eyes, the way he obviously wants to take care of me.

He puts his hand on my cheek and I lean into his touch. His palm is warm, his skin soft, as usual. I close my eyes, letting myself enjoy the scent of his fingers, coffee and oak.

“It’s okay,” he says, his voice low, breathy. “You can tell me.”

“I don’t know,” I reply. “I think it’s because there’s a part of me that feels really fucking hot that he can be inside my head and still want me.”

He moves away from me, grabbing a tendril of hair and curling it on his finger as he breathes deeply. “You know, Trine,” he says. “You could tell me anything and I’d still want you.”

I look into his eyes, his pupils expanding as he looks at me. I can see the ridges of his lips, the way his dark eyelashes curl toward his perfectly arched groomed brows. “I mean that.”

“I know,” I say. “But there are things I don’t want anyone to know. And, you know, it’s not fair, because I don’t really know that much about him. Like I know his name and that he’s a demon and…I mean, it’s not fair.”

He nods. “You could ask him.”

“I don’t want to,” I say quickly. “I feel like if he wants to tell me something, then he should, you know, tell me.”

“He might be worried he would scare you. Considering his background.”

I smile at him. “It’s weird to see you defending him,” I say. “I didn’t think you liked him.”

“I don’t like him. I think he’s dangerous,” he says. “But you like him and things are hard enough for you right now.”

I laugh, shaking my head. “Doesn’t it annoy you?” I ask. “That I’m sitting here talking about another guy while you’re right in front of me?”

He thinks about that for a second, his brow furrowed. “I don’t love hearing about it, but we’re friends, and I understand that you’re in a weird situation. So…”

“What about you?” I ask.

“What about me?” he asks. “I don’t care about him. You can talk to me about whatever you are, but regardless. He’s out there and I’m here. You and I are the ones talking. He might be inside your head, but you’re choosing to talk to me.”

I breathe out shakily. He’s right, and the fact that he’s here, just listening to me, is genuinely really fucking hot.

He’s right. I feel like I could tell him anything. Whatever I wanted. I don’t think he would run.

Rei has seen me at my worst. But even as I look at him, I realize I don’t know him that well. We’ve gone on one date at the most. I have so many questions about him.

“What are you thinking about?” he asks.

“About you,” I say. “I don’t know you that well.”

He cracks a smile. “What do you want to know?” he asks, his hands falling so that they’re right in front of me. I grab them, our fingers interlaced.

“Everything,” I say. “I want to know everything.”

TRINE

His smile widens as he inches closer to me. I can feel the heat rolling off his skin. He’s so close to me that his breath is hot against me. “Where do you want me to start?”
