“Yes, my child. It was time.”

“Mother!” Beba screams as she comes racing towards her, wrapping her up in her arms. “It’s been so long.” Tears stream from her eyes when she releases her and turns back to face us.

Beba starts to open her mouth to speak, but her mother stops her, speaking up first.

“We have a special place already for your father, Maverick. One he can never escape but will be tortured every day for the rest of his life for all his misdoings. No one will be responsible. We never expected you or your mate to be responsible for his demise. Salvador, Maclavar, step forward please, and take him into custody, then you may return to begin the courtship of your mate.”

The two fuckers who dropped in earlier and were helping us in the battle step forward moving to Mr. Michaelson. Well, now, we know their names. Both of them pull a vial from their pocket and take turns placing it between his lips, forcing it down his throat, covering his mouth and nose with their hands ensuring that he swallows it.

“Shay, we have given him a sleeping potion that will keep him in a catatonic state until we place him in his cell. I need you to call back your magic and release him.”

Shay

“Release him? He needs to die for killing my mate!” I scream out.

“Yes, darling, I am aware of your mate. But it needs to end this way, make this sacrifice of not having his death on your or Maverick’s conscious. The prophecy has happened just as it was intended. By killing him, you allow the passage for evil to seep in, turning you to the dark,” Beba’s mother explains.

“As intended. By losing one of the men I love. What if he escapes and comes back and kills more or takes my daughter?” My voice rises in volume with my anger.

“He will not escape and any time you need to see for confirmation, just call on me and I’ll take you.” Beba moves from her, stepping forward to me, taking my hands in hers.

“You can trust her. She’ll never let him escape and his torture will be far greater than the quick death either you or Maverick could give him. Let her take him and this be over with,” she pleads with me, her eyes showing me the truth in her words.

“Fine.” I throw my hands in Mr. Michaelson’s direction and the vines retract, sinking down into the ground where they came from. The two men grab ahold of him as the dead weight of his body drops to the ground before they disappear in a blinding light.

I drop to the ground in a heaping mess. My daughter is safe, but I’ve lost my sweet Hunter. I know we’ve only known each other a short time, but a piece of my heart has been ripped from me and I don’t know how to go on from here. I need to be with him.

Beba lowers herself to the ground in front of me. But I teleport away to be with my lost mate.

When I got there, they had removed the branch from his chest, leaving a gaping hole. He didn’t need to be on the cold ground. He needed the warmth of his home and I needed away from this field. So I pulled him into my arms and teleported us back to the living room of our home. That's where they found me an hour later. Hunter’s cold body still clutched tightly in my arms, and my tears dried down my face. I’d wrapped him in a blanket to cover the hole and to keep him warm. I knew he was dead. He couldn't feel how cold his body had grown, but it made me feel a tad bit better.

I see them come in, grief showing on their faces as they all gather around. None more riddled with grief than Ryder, who moves to sit beside me, taking Hunter’s hand in his.

A throat clearing pulls my attention and I look up to see who it came from, Beba’s mother.

“My sweet girl, in the times we’ve met, I’m not sure if I gave you my name and if I did, it wasn’t mine. I never wanted it to return Beba’s memory or for her to know of my involvement, but it’s Cafell. As an oracle, we are never meant to intervene for fear of changing what is meant to happen. It was always foreseen you would win the war and with a loss. You’ve suffered so much grief and loss in your life, it’s time you have happiness. But happiness comes at a cost as well. I have the power to grant you one wish, one I know will be to restore the life of your mate. But it will come at a cost. Life and death require a balance. Are you prepared to pay that price?”

“YES! Anything! I just need you to bring him back to me, to us.”

“Are you not concerned about the price?”

“NO! If it doesn't involve my daughter, then no. I’d give up my own for him.”

“I was hoping you’d say that,” Cafell starts, but she never gets the chance to finish as each of the guys jump up in protest, even Ryder.

“I love my brother Shay, and I want him back more than anything, but he would never want to live knowing you’ve given up your life for him. Think of Chelle, she needs a mother,” he begs me with the others agreeing.

“What about one of us?” Maverick asks. “What about taking my life instead? It was my father who caused it, so it should be me.”

“NO!! I will not trade the life of one of you for the other. None of you mean more to me than the other. Chelle will have Beba and fathers who love her. It’s final! Trade my life for his!”

Cafell's face morphs into a smile that goes from ear to ear, confusing me even more.

“That’s the self-sacrifice the fates needed to perform the spell. No one will die today, instead, Hunter’s life span will be tied to Shay. When she dies, so will he, but this time it will be permanent. We are unsure of how long your span of life will be with how powerful a witch you are, but we know it will not be infinite.”

“DO IT!” comes from me in a voice so forceful. I don’t need to think twice I’d give my life up a million times over for him.

“Can you link me to Shay as well? I’ve been given a taste of life without my brother, and for the brief time we lost Shay, I knew how it would feel. I don’t want to feel either again.”
