“My parents have an annual New Year’s Eve party at their place in Lake Placid.”

“Yesterday, you said your proposition would benefit us both.”

“I go to your party with you. You go to my party with me.”

“What’s the benefit?” she asked.

“One, we don’t have to go alone. Two, by going together, neither of us has to pretend we like the holidays. You know, as we might have to with another plus one.”

Calla unfolded her arms and took a bite of bacon. “Would we go as friends or as a date?”

“Whichever you’d prefer—”

“Friends.”

That she said it before I’d finished my sentence stung a little. However, it was no secret, to me anyway, that Calla wasn’t interested in me the same way I was in her. That I’d kissed her was more than I ever thought possible. This morning, when I used my mouth and hands to bring her to orgasm, it felt like a dream. If we were back to being “just friends,” I’d accept it graciously. Or at least politely.

“I may be out of line here, but you don’t seem like a huge fan of your parents. Or at least your dad. Why do you go, if that’s the case?” she asked.

“Same reason you’re thinking about attending the Invincibles’ party. A certain amount of gratitude, I guess. While I’m not crazy about how my father flaunts his money, I never wanted for anything. No way I could’ve afforded competitive skiing without their support.”

“I get that.” She took another bite of bacon, then looked over at me. “I have a stipulation.”

I almost said, “Lemme guess, no more kissing,” but I kept my mouth shut, just in case that wasn’t it.

“We each pay our own way.”

My eyes scrunched. “Okay.”

“Meaning you buy your own plane ticket to Texas; I buy my own to New York.”

“Okay,” I repeated. “Why is this a thing?”

“Last night, you paid the check before it even came to the table.”

“So?”

“We’ve always split the check when we’ve eaten out together.”

“The difference is last night I asked you to join me. You know, invited you.”

“You’re inviting me to your parents’ party too.”

“Fair enough. We each pay our own way. Anything else?”

When she shook her head, I breathed a quiet sigh of relief. At least, kissing—or more—wasn’tofficiallyoff the table.

“The Invincibles’ party is this coming weekend. And it’s black tie,” she reminded me.

“Not a problem.”

“So…do you want to meet me there?”

“Is there a reason we can’t travel on the same flight?” I asked.

“I guess not.”

“Do you already have your ticket?”
