“Changing my ticket.”

“Why?” I asked before the reason dawned on me. “You’re flying first class, aren’t you?”

“No,” he said, turning the screen more so I couldn’t see what he was doing.

“Liar.”

“I just assumed we would, that’s all.” His cheeks turned pink like they had last night. I couldn’t understand why he got so flustered about having money. He said he caught a lot of flack about it at the bureau, but this seemed like more than that.

“Don’t change because of me. Since I’m comfortable in an exit row and wouldn’t eat on a plane anyway, I don’t see any reason to spend the extra money. You do you, and I’ll do me.”

“It’s a three-and-a-half-hour flight.”

“Exactly. It’ll be over before you know it. Ready to work on the other tickets?”

“Yeah, give me a sec.”

I stood and looked over his shoulder. “Spider! What are you doing? Don’t fly economy just because I am.”

“I want to sit with you.”

I rolled my eyes and sat down. “You’re being ridiculous. If it means that much to you, I’ll switch.”

“No, it’s okay. I’ve already changed it. Just tell me what row and seat you’re in,” he said.

“I’m in 15C.”

“Great. B is open.”

“But that’s the middle seat. You’re six-three.”

“You said it’s the exit row. More legroom.”

“You’ve never flown economy, have you?”

He sat back and folded his arms. “What’s your point?”

“Why does it bother you so much? I know you said you caught shit for it at the bureau, but this feels more like an overreaction.”

He leaned forward and rested his arms on the bar. “I don’t know. It’s always been that way, I guess.”

“Why?”

He closed his eyes and raised his face to the ceiling. “Can we change the subject?”

“Sure.” I closed my laptop, got up, and went out to sit by the pool.

Spider followed a few seconds later.

“I kind of get it,” I told him as I took off my shoes, rolled up my jeans, and stuck my feet in the water.

“You do?”

“I have a lot of money, Spider. More than I can ever spend in my lifetime.”

He sat down beside me but didn’t say anything.

“You think having it bothers you? Mine is blood money.”
