“Do it anyway.”

He turned around, lowered his head, and looked into my eyes. “You’re more ready than you think you are.” He walked closer and rested his hand on my heart. “Here.” He moved the same hand up to cup the side of my head. “It’s here you’re telling yourself you aren’t.”

SPIDER

For both our sakes, I decided to leave shortly after we’d finished purchasing our plane tickets. Even if Calla had asked me not to, I knew we both needed time and space to sort through our feelings. If I’d stayed a moment longer, I wouldn’t have been able to stop myself from saying the one thing Calla was definitely not ready to hear. I was in love with her. That much was undeniable.

Instead of taking her to dinner the night before we left for Texas, like I’d originally hoped, I told her I’d meet her at the airport today before our flight. While I typically arrived at the airport with over an hour to spare, not wanting to risk hitting traffic between Palm Beach and Miami, now I was faced with more than two hours to kill.

I was about to sit at the bar of an airport restaurant when I saw Calla heading toward our gate, rolling a carry-on beside her, and wearing a pair of jeans, a snug black sweater, and black boots.

“Can I get that for you, miss?” I said, walking up behind her.

She spun around and put her hand on her heart. “Hey, Spider.”

“Sorry if I startled you. I was about to get breakfast when I saw you walk by.”

“I’m starving. Mind if I join you?”

“I’d love it. Bar or table?” I asked.

“Bar’s good with me.”

I leaned forward and kissed her cheek. “It’s nice to see you, Calla.”

She smiled. “It’s nice to see you too.”

We both ordered coffee when the bartender dropped off menus. The buttermilk pancakes sounded good, but I doubted they’d come close to the ones Calla made. I decided on eggs and bacon and set the menu down.

“Would you mind if I have a drink?” she asked.

“Of course not. What would you like?”

Calla rolled her shoulders. “A Bloody Mary.”

“I could go for one of those myself.”

When the bartender approached, I ordered two, then waited for Calla to order her breakfast. When she chose the pancakes, I was surprised but asked for the same thing.

When the man walked away, I sensed her tension. “Anything I can help with?”

“Call Rile for me and tell him I caught a last-minute flight to Fiji?”

I smiled. “Fiji versus Austin. Hmm. Mind if I go along?”

“Both of us would end up on his shit list if we did. Decker’s too.”

“Probably wouldn’t offer me a gig either. By the way, maybe I should’ve asked if you minded.”

“Minded what? That you let Decker know you’d be interested in contracting with them?”

I nodded.

“Of course not. You’re a good agent, Spider. They’d be lucky to have you on board.”

“Cheers,” I said when our drinks appeared. We clinked glasses and each took a hefty sip.
