“He’s very angry.”

“So? Let him be angry. At Dein. Not at those two kids. They don’t have a clue about what’s happening.”

She looked out at the water. “I have no say in this.”

“Are you fucking kidding me?”

“Corbin!”

“No, this is ridiculous. I’ll concede Dein is an asshole, but this happened years ago. Tell Dad to get the hell over it so you can spend Christmas with your grandkids.”

“I can’t.”

“Can’t what?” I heard my father bark from behind me.

“Tell you, you’re wrong. Tell you she doesn’t want Coryn and Steffan to be deprived of seeing their grandparents on Christmas. That she doesn’t want to be deprived of seeing them.”

“This is none of your concern. You’ve caused enough trouble.”

“By telling the truth? Jesus. Aren’t you glad you know about her? Don’t you want to meet her?”

“Who is that?” my father said, looking beyond me.

I turned around and watched a car approach, stunned speechless when I saw the back door open and Calla get out.

SPIDER

“Excuse me,” I heard myself say as I raced from the terrace to the driveway. “Hi. Um, what are you doing here?”

Calla held out a box. “You forgot this.”

“What is it?”

“From the Invincibles.”

“Oh. You didn’t have to…” While I was in a state of shock, I knew that wasn’t the reason she’d come. “Why are you here, Calla?”

“I needed to see you. There are things…I need to say.”

There was a sharp pain in my heart. “There’s no reason to tell me in person. I get it.”

“I don’t think you do.” She looked up at the house. “Is there somewhere else we can talk?”

“God, I’m sorry. Of course we can.” I motioned for her to go ahead of me. “I’ll warn you. We’re in the midst of some major family drama. I hope my parents don’t subject you to it, but just in case.”

“Over Danielle?”

I nodded. “My brother and his family left a little while ago. I confronted him about her. My parents overheard. Many angry words followed.”

“I’m sorry, Spider.”

“Don’t be. None of this is your fault or doing. My family, well, I’ve made what I think of them clear.”

I opened the door, and we walked inside. Thankfully, I didn’t see or hear either of my parents. However, rather than leading Calla out to the terrace, I took her into the sitting room just off the foyer. “Can I get you anything? Coffee? Something to eat?”

“Can you just sit with me?”
