“Because today is your day to make the rules.”

Calla looked at the clock on the mantle. “In fifteen minutes, it will be your turn.”

“We could flip a coin.”

“No. I’ve decided.” She bit her bottom lip.

“Do you want me to guess?”

Calla smiled. “Sure.”

“The Unstoppables.”

“How did you know?”

“I’ve known all along,” I said, leaning forward to kiss her like I had hundreds of times since Christmas Eve. I looked up at the clock, making sure I had enough time to respond. “Because we don’t have to fit into a mold that’s already been cast. This team will be as much ours as it is Fury’s and Vex’s.”

“I’m glad they offered you a partnership too.”

“Even if they hadn’t, I knew it’s where you’d want to be.” I glanced at the time again.

“Is it getting close to midnight? You keep looking at the clock.”

“I want to show you something.” I took her hand and walked over to the French doors that led to the heated terrace. As we crossed the threshold, I pressed the button on the remote control that had been in the left pocket of my tuxedo all night.

“It’s so beautiful,” Calla gasped.

I put my arms around her and spun us both in a circle, letting the warmth of a thousand red and white twinkling overhead lights bathe us in their glow. All around us were decorated Christmas trees of various sizes, but the largest stood in the center of the space with a single chair beside it.

Inside, the revelers began the countdown. I raised my glass and stared into Calla’s eyes. “I love you.”

“I love you,” she said.

At the stroke of midnight, we kissed, then I led her over to the chair by the tree. When she sat, I got down on one bended knee, reached into my jacket’s right pocket, and pulled out the box that had also been there since the beginning of the night.

“Will you marry me, Calla?” I said, holding the ring that had been inside out to her.

“Yes, I’ll marry you.”

I slid the ring on her finger, and as I kissed her, I pulled my phone out of my back pocket. I held it up and snapped a picture.

“Let me see,” she said, giggling.

I turned the phone around before looking at the screen. “How’d it turn out?”

“It’s perfect,” she beamed. “Thisis my favorite photo of the two of us.”

“We never sent the other one to Rile.”

Calla took the phone, tapped the screen, and I heard the swoosh of the message being sent right before I heard the whiz of the first of the fireworks, shooting into the sky above us.

“Happy New Year, soon-to-be Mrs. Vaughn.”

“Happy New Year, my soon-to-be husband.”
