Spending Christmas at home. Talk next year.

I reread the message I’d received from McKenna “Scottie” Walsh, aka the woman IthoughtI was in a relationship with. The same woman whose bed I’d rolled out of this morning, promising I’d call after the meeting I had scheduled with Fury, my partner in the Unstoppables, the new Invincibles team.

Scottie hadn’t mentioned being gone for Christmas then or last night, or any of the five nights before when we fell asleep in each other’s arms.

“Are you okay?” asked Fury.

“Yeah. Uh, sorry. Let’s get started.”

She leaned against the back of her chair. “You’re distracted. Tell me what’s going on, or there’s no point in even having this meeting.”

If anyone besides Fury had spoken those same words to me, I would have assured them I was, in fact, paying attention and asked them to get started. She knew me too well for me to get away with such bullshit. We’d worked together on several assignments before she quit the agency and got her law degree. The mutual respect between us was strong. In fact, we often joked we were more like siblings than coworkers.

“Scottie is spending Christmas at home. Without me,” I confessed, holding up my phone. “This is how she told me.”

“Did you just receive her message?”

I nodded.

“Odd.”

“I’ll say.” I had no doubt Fury knew Scottie and I were seeing each other, but she might not know how seriously. “We’ve been together every night since we returned from Spain last month. She spent Thanksgiving with our family.”

“Have you talked about Christmas?”

“Indirectly.”
