“Wait,” said Casper, putting her hand on my arm before I had a chance to get out.

“I’m walking you in. That’s nonnegotiable, sweetheart.”

“That wasn’t what I was going to say.”

“What, then?”

She leaned closer to me. “You don’t have to find a hotel. You can stay here,” she whispered.

“Are you sure about that?”

“Why not? I mean, we stayed in the same cabin for weeks, right?”

We had. And every night was torture for me. However, like then, I would do it again just because it meant I could be with her, close to her, a little longer.

I thanked the driver, got out, walked around the car, and opened her door, holding my hand out like I had at the restaurant. Also like then, I didn’t let go until we reached the entrance to her house.

She started to enter a code into the keypad, but stopped.

“I’m not looking, if that’s what you’re afraid of.”

“That isn’t it.”

“What, then?”

Casper turned her head toward me and did the very last thing I ever expected her to. She kissed me.

CASPER

Idon’t know what possessed me to kiss Spider. I was all set to unlock the door, show him in, and lead him to the guest room. But he was standing so close, and he smelled so good, and he was so damned sweet and so fucking hot, I couldn’t help myself.

Rather than pull away, like part of me feared he would, he cupped my cheek and deepened our kiss. How many times had I wondered how his lips would feel on mine? Too many to count. Then, though, I hadn’t spent the evening drinking vodka, eating fabulous food, and enjoying Spider’s company so much I hadn’t wanted the date to end.

Maybe stone-cold sober, I would’ve talked myself out of being interested in him like I had so many times before. I might’ve reminded myself the house we were about to walk into was one I’d shared with my beloved husband.

Instead, I did none of those things. I focused all my attention on the way his tongue licked the seam of my lips before I opened to him and our mouths fused in frenzied desire. He lowered his hand and wrapped his arms around me. His fingers trailed down my spine, and he cupped the cheeks of my ass.

“Open the door, Calla,” he said, kissing down the side of my face to where the collar of my dress covered my neck.

I entered the code, and we practically fell inside. Spider released me, closed the door, and when I set my bag on the table in the foyer, he stood behind me and wrapped his arms around my waist.

“God, you smell good,” he said, breathing in as his head rested against mine.

“Spider—”

He dropped his arms and took a step back. “Sorry, I crossed the line—”

I turned around so I could see his face. “You didn’t. I did.”

He nodded and pulled his phone from his pocket, punching something on the screen.

“What are you doing?” I asked.

“Seeing if the driver’s left the island yet.”

Inexplicably, my eyes filled with tears. “Why?”
