She sighs, and I can hear the obvious relief in her voice that I made it home in one piece. “You sure you don’t want to come back to Ohio? It’s so nice and quiet here, and I know Mom and Dad will sleep so much better at night.”

I pull the comforter up under my chin and snuggle down under the blankets. “I can’t make a name for myself in Ohio, you know that. I needed to make the move. It was time. And Mom and Dad will be just fine without me. Besides, Dean still lives in Ohio.”

“I see we’re still harboring ill feelings for Dean?”

“Of course we are!” I snort through my nose, which is all kinds of feminine. “When you walk in on your boyfriend of over three years and find his dick lodged firmly down the throat of your so-called best friend, it takes a little effort to come back from that sort of thing.”

“You ran away.”

“I didn’t run away. I… I just walked very quickly.”

“Ha, ha,” she says sarcastically. “Look, sis, I get that Dean hurt you and it was hideous what he and Laci did to you. I totally get that. I’d die if Michael ever cheated on me. But maybe you two could work things out if you just came home again. He’s really sorry for the way things ended. He talks about you all the time, and I know he’d take you back in a heartbeat if you’d just answer his calls.”

“I can’t believe you’re defending him?”

“I’m not! Honestly, I’m not,” she says quickly. “But you two were so adorable together. At some point, you’re going to have to talk to him. He’s in the wedding party, after all.”

“And why is that, again?”

“He’s Michael’s cousin.”

“Yeah, right.”

“Just give him a chance to explain himself and then things can go back to the way they were before you left town. Please, Brinley, at least think about it.”

I sigh.

I can’t believe we are having this conversation.Again.

I was so hurt by Dean, my heart was crushed and shattered into a million pieces. I don’t care if I ever see him again. But of course, that would be too simple. Of course he’s my soon-to-be brother-in-law’s cousin. And of course he’s in the wedding party.

“The maid of honor and the best man have to share a dance, and it’ll make for a very awkward reception if you two can’t work things out,” continues Mia, determined to prove her point.

“There’s nothing to work out, Mia. We’re done.”

“Are you sure?”

“Yes!”

She sighs. “I just think if you gave him a second chance, then you might be surprised with how much he regrets his actions. He’s really sorry. I swear it. He told Michael that he didn’t even mean for it to happen.”

I roll over onto my side, gazing out at the streetlight and the gentle rain falling in front of it. “Mia, his hands were knotted in her hair. His dick was in her mouth. And he was pumping away like a fucking jackrabbit on steroids. His jeans were pooled around his ankles and he had a goddamn smile on his face as he moaned her name over and over again. How did he not mean for it to happen? Did a gust of wind suddenly come up and blow his cock out of his pants, and straight into Laci’s mouth? Now that would be an unfortunate turn of events.”

“Brinley –”

“No. I’m sick of people making excuses for him. Dean’s a grown man, and he made his own bed. Now he can lay in it. Besides, it was going on for a while.”

“It was?”

“Yes. He confessed later that night.”

I hear Mia gasp, followed by another long sigh. But I don’t need her sympathy. I’m totally over Dean. Or at least, that’s what I’ve been telling myself ever since I moved away. It’s just easier that way.Asshole.I really need to change the subject before I start crying again. I’ve cried too many tears over Dean Trent and his wandering phallic-shaped appendage. “How’s the wedding plans coming along?”

“Good. The flowers have been finalized and paid for, and Michael ordered the suits this morning. You’re still coming down the last week of November, right?”

“Uh, well…”

“Oh god, Brinley, please tell me you haven’t booked another gig. I’ve already told Miss Pamela that you’ll be here for the final fitting. She can’t keep guessing the measurements. They change every time you send them.”
