I close my eyes and sink back farther into my pillow, internally cringing at the thought of what she’s picked out for me. A dress I’ll no doubt look absolutely ridiculous wearing in front of the two hundred guests she’s invited to our parents’ property. Mia has been planning this wedding for months now. Everyone from our small town will be there. I’m thrilled for her, of course I am, and Michael is a great guy. He treats Mia like a princess, and that’s all that matters.

I bite my lip, a spear of regret and maybe a little sadness tearing through me. Dean never treated me like a princess. Not once in the whole time we were together. Not unless princesses are meant to stay home by themselves on Friday nights while the prince spends his time fixing cars and getting drunk with his buddies at the local tavern.

Ugh.

A pang of longing and betrayal wars inside me and my heart squeezes in protest. Fuck Dean.

And Laci.

Fuck her too. Fuck them both.

“I’ll be there. I promise,” I tell her.

“Good,” says Mia, exhaling with relief. “I can’t wait to see you. I need your help picking out the cake. Michael said he doesn’t care what flavor we get, but I know you understand how important it is in setting the entire theme for a wedding.”

“Who doesn’t?” I’m so tired I can barely keep my eyes open any longer and my head feels entirely too heavy against the pillow. “Hey, I’m gonna go. I’ve got a big day tomorrow and I need some rest.”

Mia takes a deep breath and I already know what’s coming. She’s going to ask if I’m sure I’m making the right decision.

“Are you sure you’re making the right decision?”

And there it is.

“Very.”

“I’m worried you’re getting in over your head. These people have money and connections. That guy looks scary as hell. He’s massive, and he’s covered with tattoos. He’s got a freaking lip ring, for goodness’ sake. And don’t even get me started on his hair. He’ll chew you up and spit you out before you even know what’s happened.”

“Your confidence in me is flattering.”

“I’m serious. I think you should back out now before it’s too late.”

I groan and shake my head with frustration, pushing my hair back out of my eyes. “I can’t just sit on my hands and do nothing. This means too much to me. Look, I’m exhausted, and I’ve got an early start. We’ll talk tomorrow, okay?”

“Okay.”

“I’ll call you when I get home. I promise.”

“Thank you. Love you.”

“Love you, too.”

“Good night.”

“Night.”

I toss my phone onto the floor beside the mattress and curl over onto my side, yanking the covers up even farther over my head.

God, it’s cold.

Tiny rivulets of water trickle down the window, iridescent in the streetlights that shine in the distance. Typical weather for this time of year, but I’m grateful for the rain as it lulls me into a sort of dreamy peacefulness.

Exhaling slowly, I close my eyes, and despite the fact that I should have a thousand other things on my mind right now, I let everything else just fall away as if it doesn’t exist.

I wish it didn’t exist.

But tomorrow is a new day, and things can only get better.

Right?
