Oh, so there is security. That’s handy. Where were you when I needed you, fellas?

“I know that looked bad, that whole situation…” I tell Reed as we head toward the front entrance. Guys are screaming at the TV, some are dancing with the waitresses, or bumping and grinding may be a more appropriate way of describing what’s happening, and the entire room stinks of stale cigarette smoke, beer, and vomit. “But I had him under control.”

I don’t think Reed’s buying it.

He instantly stops walking, turns sharply on the balls of his feet to look at me with eyes blazing. “Really? You had him under control? Because the way I see it, I walk in here and find some guy feeling you up, and it didn’t look to me like you had it under control at all.”

“Don’t be so arrogant,” I shout over the noise.

“Don’t be so fucking naïve!” he shouts right back at me.

“I realize it looked bad, but I was handling it.”

“No, Brinley, he was the one handling you. You’re out of your league in a place like this. We’re leaving, now. You’re done here.”

Oh, the audacity of this man.

He just saved me from a situation that could have turned south very quickly. Yes. But dammit if he’s about to tell me what to do. I’m not a child.

“Is that so?”

Reed swallows hard, his proud Adam’s apple bobbing up and down in his throat. He leans down so that I have no choice but to look up at him. Christ, he’s so low we’re almost eye to eye. “Don’t defy me, Tink.”

“Or what?”

“Christ.”He laughs, but he doesn’t sound the slightest bit amused. He leans even closer, his nose brushing the side of my face. “Or I’ll show you what your defiance does to me.”

Breathing is optional, right?

He pulls me in front of him, shielding my body with his muscled arms when another fight breaks out. “Walk. Now,” he demands with a gruff voice.

Nudging me gently toward the entrance, his hands on my shoulders, I don’t know what comes over me. I have the most overwhelming need to find out what my defiance does to him, and so I look back over my shoulder and say, “You don’t always get to call the shots, Reed.”

“Enough with the bratty remarks,” he seethes into my ear.

He suddenly releases my shoulders, his hands gone and my shoulders totally mourn the loss of his firm touch.

But then I feel his hands slide around my hips, and he tugs me back against him, holding my body tight against his. His chest is pressed firmly against my back, and standing this close to him feels familiar and foreign, terrifying and invigorating all at the same time.

He runs one finger down my cheek, playing with a strand of my hair and when he presses himself forward, I can feel that he’s rock hard against the top of my ass cheeks.

Hard, and huge.

Oh god.

“This isn’t optional, Brinley,” he breathes into my ear. “Don’t fucking defy me again, or I’ll show you what happens to naughty girls who don’t know how to keep their mouths shut.”

I open my mouth to respond, but I have no words and all that comes out is a breathy peep that makes absolutely no sense at all.

I don’t know what’s going on here, but my girlie parts tremble with the way he just spoke to me, and with the way that glorious thing is poking in my back, and I don’t even know why.

I shouldn’t let him talk to me like that, so forceful and high-handed, but the thought of what this man could do to me, to my body, sends arousal coursing through me, warming me deep inside my belly, making me want things that I’ve never wanted before.

“You’re coming with me. No arguments,” says Reed, releasing me from his firm hold and urging me forward again. “I’m taking you home.”

Reed

Turning the corner, I swing the Jeep into the brightly lit parking lot of the nearest 7-Eleven, trying my hardest to drown out the sound of Brinley’s never-ending questions.
