Page 9 of Lyrics of Her

Itfeelsdifferent too.

It’s been stripped back to the bare bones and reworked in such a unique way that makes it completely her own, and I suddenly want to drown in the sound, and drown in her, and drown in the genius of such a creative mind that has put this stunning arrangement together.

“She’s not half-bad,” says Kael, noticing what’s caught my attention.

“Yeah,” I mumble, not taking my eyes off her.

“Hot, too.”

I nod casually; shrug my shoulders like I don’t really give a shit if Kael thinks she’s hot or not. But truth be told, my stomach dips and swirls with the way her lips move so effortlessly against the microphone and the way her tongue slides over her lips between the lyrics, and I suddenly don’t want Kael looking at her or thinking about her at all.

What the hell is wrong with me?

I haven’t had a reaction to a girl like this in a really long time.If ever.

She’s fucking exquisite.

Jaxon turns in his seat, glancing over his shoulder. “Yeah, she’s decent,” he says with a noncommittal shrug of his broad shoulders. “I need to take a piss.” He heads off in the direction of the restrooms, and I’ve never before been more grateful to see the back of his head.

Decent? The hell’s he talking about? The guy wouldn’t know his ass from his elbow. This chick is incredible.

Her head falls back slightly as the words of the second verse leave her mouth and her voice is like thick honey dripping all over me. It’s an earthy combination of sounds, completely honest, strong, yet subtle and smooth. It’s vulnerable in a way most singers don’t know how to pull off without it coming across as forced and premeditated.

She closes her eyes as the chorus comes in once more, and as the song continues, I get swept away in the notes and the way she takes me along for the ride.

The song eventually finishes, but the girl’s eyes remain closed for a few seconds after the last words are sung, her mouth softly parted as the last breathy note leaves her body.

Eventually, she opens her eyes again, and it’s like she’s just woken up from a deep sleep. She startles slightly, taking a quick breath, and I can totally relate to being so in the zone that you completely lose focus of where you are or what you’re doing. The music consumes you, and you let it, because there’s no other feeling like it in the world when that happens.

It’s like sinking, or floating, or flying. All at once. Nothing else compares.

It’s better than sex.

The lights come up a little brighter and for the first time since she took the stage, I can finally see her more clearly. Her brown hair barely touches her shoulders. It’s wavy on the ends with long layers, and her bangs hang low across one side of her forehead. Her face is round, her cheekbones high and her green eyes are wide and deep-set, though they almost look like they don’t match any other part of her face.

“Oy!”

I look up, and Kael is snapping his fingers at me, just like Nick did earlier and you’d really think he’d know better than that by now.Apparently not.I grab his wrist and slam his hand down firmly against the table, grinding his knuckles into the chipped wood. “Do that again, and I’ll break your fucking hand. Got it?”

“Jesus, alright, alright…” he wails, half bent over.

I release his hand again with a sharp jolt, and I sit back in my seat. I’m ready to leave. I shouldn’t have come. I knew this was a bad idea. I’ve got a big day tomorrow, and I’ve had enough for one night.

I glance across the room and find Quinn sitting over at the bar now, nursing a glass of vodka and Cassie is wiping down the counter in front of him with a damp rag, laughing at something he just said.

Yeah. He’s not going anywhere.

If I know Kael at all, he’s settling in for the long haul, and God knows what Jaxon has planned for the evening. History has a way of repeating itself, so my guess is he’s already scoured the room for someplace warm to bury his cock for the night.

The girl on the stage starts singing another song, and although I try not to focus on her, try not to think about the way she makes my stomach tighten and my fingers tingle with some unknown sensation, my traitorous eyes betray me, and I find myself looking back up at the stage again, seemingly spellbound by her voice, and her songs, and I hate to admit it, but I think I’m captivated by pretty much everything else about her too.

I tear my eyes away.

“I’m out,” I suddenly say to Kael, swigging the last of my beer until I’ve drained the entire bottle dry. Rising quickly to my feet, I slide out from the booth. “Tell the others we’ll meet up tomorrow afternoon. I’ve had enough for one night. I’m going home.”

“Sure. Whatever,” he mumbles.

I glance up at the stage one last time because apparently I’m a glutton for punishment. The girl has her eyes closed again, and she’s swaying back and forth slowly as she sings about some guy who’s smiling at the sun rising over the mountains, and for some crazy reason I feel myself smiling too.
