Is she sure?

I’m pretty positive it was something else. Sophia maybe?

That day in Alma’s office before I found out my mom had died and I’d be living with Abram, I could’ve sworn she said her name was something different.

Not that it matters, those kind eyes have that same loaded sense of determination as they had that day. A lifetime ago…

Thisis Eli’s mom?

I don’t get the chance to dwell on it too long because there’s some sort of shuffling. By the time I look to see Sgt. Daniels has already charged Lorna. No doubt using the interruption as the perfect excuse to jump into action.

She dodges him, anticipating his move, but he’s faster and more canny and effortlessly bests her.

Reaching, he takes the gun by the muzzle with one hand, using the other, he grabs her wrist and twists. The move performed as flawlessly as if he’s done it thousands of times.

She screams in her surprise as the gun is kicked to the other side of the room.

“Who the hell are you?” Silas spits while Lorna struggles. Her arms are now restrained to her back.

Eli’s dad may not physically have a hold on Silas like he does Lorna but he’s keeping an eye out all the same. Identical to all the other guys in the room.

Now that the weapon’s gone, Silas has taken it upon himself to move into the next stage of business. Ever the capitalist.

Sarah—Eli’smom—seems unfazed by the question. Her mouth lifts before flattening back out. Is she…amused?

“What? Don’t remember me? I wasyoursecretary,” she drawls.

Her voice carries the kind of sweetness that comes off nice, but you’d never be able to tell if she’s actually being engaging or if it’s sarcasm.

I instantly like her more because of it.

Lorna, with her cold-blooded eyes, looks the least shocked of everyone. A strangled noise gurgles as it seeps from her lungs. Handfuls of loose, dark hair frame her face from where they’ve fallen out of her once-perfect bun.

Sgt. Daniels’s grip tightens further. Moving the one limb underneath her forearms. It gives her that much less access to move.

Silas’s teeth show and they’re too sharp. “That doesn’t tell me anything. I’ve had hundreds.”

Does this man hear himself? Understand how awful that sounds?

Doubtful.

“Mom,” Eli says, dipping his chin. “What is that?” Referring to the item in her hands.

Glancing down, her mouth does that thing again, only this time when it lifts, it holds, staying. “Dunno, it’s not mine.”

“Whose is it then?”

Sarah shrugs, speaking to the room even though it is Silas who’s asking the questions. “I would assume whoever has the key to open it. That’s usually how these things work.”

“Who gave you the box?”

She doesn’t stutter. “Your wife.”

“Mywife?”

Cole, who’s still partially blocking me, that already oversized frame of his widening further at the startling comment. More so than it should be possible, does it flex.

Silas’s mouth splutters. “What’s inside? Why would she give it toyou?”
