“Acting like a caveman.”

“I was teasing you.”

“Yeah, but you were right. I know you can stand up for yourself. You don’t need me racing in to save you.”

She kisses my hand again. “What you did wasn’t just about me. And it wasn’t just about him trying to steal your research. It was to do with what he said about Victoria. And it was for betraying Elizabeth. You’re very protective of your women.”

“You make it sound like I have a harem.”

“If the cap fits.” She smiles. “I asked Elizabeth if you two had ever been an item.”

“Elizabeth? She’s far too short for me.”

“She said you were too intense for her.”

I chuckle. “Yeah, probably.”

“She also said she knows where the bodies are buried.”

“That’s true.”

“She mentioned something about a band. And your hair…”

I groan. “It seemed like a good idea at the time.”

She giggles. Then she says, “If I tell you something, you promise not to be angry with her?”

“Okay…”

“She told me about your research.”

I meet her eyes. “Ah.”

“Why didn’t you tell me, Mack?”

“I hadn’t finished. I didn’t want to give you false hope.”

“That’s what she said you’d say.”

“My part’s done now. Her team will start running trials very soon. Depending on how his current treatment goes, I’d like to get your father on it.”

She kisses my hand again. “Thank you.” She studies my knuckles. “She also told me a little about you coming to New Zealand.”

I close my eyes and sigh.

“Can you tell me the rest?” she asks.

“What did she say?”

She summarizes what Elizabeth told her. “She said she didn’t know any more than that. But…” She takes a deep breath. “I’ve got one final admission to make.”

I meet her eyes, then slowly sit up. “Okay.”

“In your office, well, in Nadine’s office, she’d put something in the rubbish bin. I’m ashamed to say I took it out and opened it. It was a birthday card addressed to you from someone called Iona.”

I study my hands.

“I’m guessing that was your mum?” Sidnie asks.
