We study each other for a moment. God, I want this girl.

I clear my throat. “So how’s the novel coming along?”

“Good, actually. I’m enjoying it. But I haven’t told anyone, not even Caro or Hana. Only you.” She smiles.

I lean on the table too, so we’re only a foot apart. “I think it sounds amazing. And if you need to do any research, you know where to come.” I smirk. “Pun intended.”

She meets my gaze. “Noted.”

Earlier, she saidOh I think we both know how this is going to end,and she’s right. At last, I’m going to take her to bed, and give myself the best Christmas present I’ve had in a long, long time.

Chapter Eleven

Sidnie

Cesare arrives with our cocktails, and we sip them in silence for a moment, enjoying the mix of flavors.

It’s not an awkward silence. I feel as if we have plenty to talk about. But there’s an air of expectation and anticipation between us, as if it’s actually Christmas Eve, and we’re both waiting to unwrap a huge present under the tree.

He looks amazing tonight. The dark- and light-blue paisley shirt fits him like a dream, tight on his biceps, and showing his impressive physique. I can’t believe I’ve got him all to myself tonight. I feel as if I’m dreaming. I’m pretty sure that no matter what I suggested, even if it was to cover him in whipped cream and lick it all off, he’d be up for it.

Hmm. There’s an idea.

“Penny for them,” he says, right at that moment.

I giggle, and he grins. “You don’t want to know,” I tell him.

“Oh, I really do.”

“Let’s just say it involves the removal of whipped dairy products without a spoon.” I suck the straw in the cocktail, trying not to laugh as his eyes widen.

“Like that, is it?” he asks. “Is this going to be about who can turn the other on the most before we make it back to the apartment?”

“Sounds like a plan.” I mean it, too. I can’t imagine he wants to spend hours talking about himself, or politics, or religion, or anything deep and meaningful. I know he’s only here for one thing. And I’m more than happy to give it to him.

He’s leaning back now, watching me with apparent amusement. “I’m so glad I met you.”

I laugh, stirring the drink. “You don’t have to give me false flattery. I know I’m nothing special. And before you reply, I’m not saying that to provoke a compliment. I know I’m relatively intelligent, and I’m not bad looking. But I’m hopeless in so many ways.”

His smile fades, and his expression turns curious. “You really have no idea how unusual you are, do you? I’ve never met anyone like you before.”

His words make me tongue-tied. “That’s… um… a nice thing to say.”

“You said you haven’t had a lot of experience,” he says. “That surprises me. I would have thought guys would be lining up at your door.”

“God, no. I’m too tall, for one thing. Guys like little dolls they can fit into their pocket, not Amazons who tower over them if they wear heels.”

“I don’t.”

“Well, no, you’re… what? Six two?”

“Yeah.”

“So a woman couldn’t tower over you unless she took a stepladder with her.” I sip my drink. “I like that you’re big.”

He lifts his eyebrows and smiles.

“I meant your height. God, you’ve got a filthy mind.”
