"Keep doing what you're doing,” he says. “Take your time, and wait until someone shows enough confidence to win you over."

Will it work on you, because you are the only man I’m interested in.

Smiling at him means I’ve already failed the test he set. But I don’t mind spending time with him. He’s interesting. Intimate and sexy, he seems relaxed and casual, as though there is no hidden agenda.

I look at his slightly parted lips and thick sweeping eyelashes. He meets my stare with a wicked smile.

"And why are you so interested? What do you get out of it?"

"The satisfaction of protecting you from random losers in this bar."

I look away, my cheeks burning.

He pushes to his feet and clinks the bottom of his glass to the rim of mine. "Good luck," he says with a wink before striding toward the pool table area.

Meanwhile, I sit gawping at his broad shoulders with my mouth hanging open, wondering what happened. But more importantly…

Who is he?

The first time I saw her turn heads was on the flight from L.A. She is beautiful, with thick hair the color of sunset and plump lips I could kiss all day. She was seated a few rows in front of me and I tried not to stare, but Jesus… the woman has curves for days.

I’ve been watching her closely since she entered the bar. She's only had a few drinks, but her cheeks are flushed, and her amber eyes are glassy.

When she asks why I’m helping her, what am I supposed to say?

I want her, but telling her will make her think I am the same as the others lining up to buy her a drink, but we are not the same.I scrub a hand over my jaw, relieving tension, and find her beaming up at me with a smile so bright it's like a slap in the face.

Oh, man. Those fucking eyes… I’m not the man for her, so I tell her what she needs to hear. She deserves better.

If there's one thing I'm good at, it's spotting danger. She may not realize she needs a protector, but I do. She doesn't realize how bad things can get if she drinks at a bar like this. I don't want the drunks in this bar going anywhere near her because if I have to watch her stumble out of this bar on some loser's arm, I’ll start throwing punches.

She's spirited, and the only way to stay close to her is by walking away, but it doesn't mean I’m not watching.

There’s only one way to keep her safe, and that's by doing it myself.I’ve got my work cut out for me, but I have a feeling she’s worth it.

Leaning over the pool cue, I line up the shot, aware that every man's eyes are on her as she strides to the pool table area. They take in her curves, long, shapely legs, and generous cleavage. I try to avoid looking at her abundant swells, or I'll get hard.

She leans her hip on the pool table, staring at me with interest, waiting for an invitation. I step around her and line up for the next shot.

"Hi, again."

"Hey, yourself.” I clear my throat to keep myself in check. “How’s the testing working out?"

"Your trick worked. No more jackasses are hitting on me, but I'm alone and have no one to talk to, so you can at least let me play pool."

I straighten up and meet her gaze. This curvy woman in a killer dress has a hot flush on her cheeks.Fuck, she's gorgeous.

“Good work weeding out the men from the boys.” I hold a hand up, and she gives me a high five.“You are welcome to stay for a game, but then you have to get back out there and meet your guy."

“What if I don’t want to?”
