Silence.

“You’re keeping something from me.”

“Oh, Amy, I was so fucking scared. I almost died.” I let out another sob until the tears keep coming.

“Fuck, what?”

“I’m okay now,” I rasp out. Even though I still have a long way to go because my thoughts are messed up. I wish Amy was here to hug me and tell me I’m doing the right thing because after what happened, I’m feeling shitty with myself.

“Hey. I’m here, babe. Tell me what happened.”

I nod even though she can’t see me. “I wish you were really here.”

I tell her what happened and how I’m now in Georgetown, Guyana.

Amy cries with me.

“Come home,” she croaks.

In my heart, I know it’s what I need to do, but I also don’t have the strength to leave Samuel.

“Have you booked your flight?”

“There’s no way I could sit on a plane and be at airports for the next thirty-odd hours. I haven’t got the strength.”

“Samuel would accompany you, right?”

“He can’t right now.”

“Bull… shiiit,” she draws out. “That’s it. I’m coming to you.”

“You can’t.” My shoulders slump. “When the time is right, I’ll come home. Samuel will make sure I’m safe, only it can’t be now. When I know, then I’ll let you know.”

“You’d better, Edes. And he better be doing the right thing by you.”

“He is,” I whisper. I knew of Samuel’s commitment before I returned, and I don’t expect anyone else to understand him as I do. “I have to go, Ames. I still need to call Mum, Dad and Faith.”

“Text me soon,” she demands.

“I will.”

“Love you.”

“I love you too.”

“Eden—”

“Yeah?” I say, placing the phone back to my ear.

“Please be careful.”

“I will.”

I end the call. My fingers tremble as though I’ve run ten miles and sprinted to the finish. I close my eyes with my phone in my hand. I need to rest before talking to my family.
